We could do worse than take a look at Antowne Woolfolk, a Cleveland kid who's in the portal from Rutgers with at least 2 yrs left. 6'8", 250. Was initially thought to be more of a football player than a hooper, but took the Rutgers hoops offer. Was hurt and didn't play much. Situation reminds me a lot of a Columbus kid, J.D. Weatherspoon, who initially went to OSU a decade ago. Transferred to Toledo and was a solid MAC big man for a couple years.

High school classmate with Elmore.

DePaul takes another one our targets in NJ Benson. I think it's going to be a challenge to reel anyone proven (especially with size) in a lateral move.

Boals also started following Bowman Hardman of OSU. Former 3 star from Cincinnati/Princeton.

I don't think Hardman is any better than any of the guards we already have and he doesn't have a higher ceiling than Burris.

All the talk on Twitter/X last night was how Oats' and Alabama is led by mid-major transfers from Ohio, Hofstra, NDSU and Wofford.

Ohio has reached out to JUCO transfer Daniel Nixon of Western Texas College. We're in the running with a bunch of other mid-majors.

Played at George Washington for two seasons then injured his knee.

Second commit in as many days for Belmont. Landed Brody Peebles from Liberty yesterday. Portal commitments seem to be moving faster this year.

Great.

But they lost their 3 best players. Gillespie is going to Maryland.

Dia and Tyson are headed for limelight programs. Dia might actually turn pro.

Oklahoma big man John Hugley is portaling.....again.

Cleveland Brush HS....knows Elmore James well.

Back up the brinks truck and get this guy.

Gut tells me Ohio State, Xavier, Cincinnati or Dayton.

If it's not Ohio, it better not be Akron.

I think Big John would be a huge get for us but do we have not only the NIL money but also the minutes? I don't know if we have enough minutes for a top tier guy.

I'm not really seeing this concern. Evans is a nice recruit; he's also a true freshman. A guy like Hugely could have all the minutes he wants, no?

Evans has the build to be kinda sorta like DeRon Holmes of Dayton after some seasoning and development. There's not much film on Evans on YouTube to go by.

Some clips on verbal commits of Evans as well.

He was originally listed as 6'9 210. I've read, and from video believe, he's grown to 6'10 but I'm not buying 210. More like 6'10 190. He's going to need to put on 30+ pounds once he gets on campus IMO.

He very well may be the best recruit when it's all said and done, but I still see a situation where he gets very limited minutes next year until he develops.

I still cringe at the thought of another year of Clayton as our starting center. He needs to be our stretch 4. With Wiz and Ezuma gone, I don't think Evans will be ready, and I don't think Searls is a starter but rather a solid 10-15 minute bench rotation gut. Means we do have starter minutes to a true center available IMO.

I would not discount Searls, a quality DII big man from a good program, who is older can help in the MAC. Not to mention he is a coaches son.

The D-2 part doesn't bother me. There was this amazing guard I used to watch play high school ball that threw down ferocious dunks on the fast breaks and hit 3-point shots from NBA distance. He picked a D-2 school over solid mid-major offers like Murray State because his teammate was going to be there playing point guard. What did the kid do? Seventh player in NCAA history and the first at the Division II level with back-to-back triple-doubles. That includes a 54 point triple double compared at the time to James Hardin. His high game in European pro basketball was 45 points.

If Searls can be a fraction of that good, he was a steal.

As I said, a fraction as good would be a plus.

That kid I used to watch was more athletic than any player on the floor in that Delaware Hayes vs St Ignatious game on TV last week as far as the eye-test could tell.

Nice picture here of that D-2 kid slashing to the rim vs a program playing in the NCAA D-1 final eight this weekend:

Big John, from my alma mater, is coming off knee surgery (meniscus) that caused him to miss the last month of the season.

BTW, don't think we have a brinks truck to back up. More like a minivan with some loose change and a few lotto tickets in the seats.

You realize I never disagreed with you or challenged your statement. I too hope Searls can be that. I’d be first to say I’m surprised. But I will not be surprised if he has a very solid year.

I can’t Imagine Boals putting himself through this again after watching The Whiz for the last two seasons. I mean the bar is set so low for Searls to make just a little bit more impact off the bench than The Whiz. All Vic has to do is catch the ball, rebound the ball and set legal screens. I don’t even care if he scores a point. Just be competent on the floor and don’t hurt your team in +/- category. Boals has more work to do to get a solid PF/C out of the portal that can give us 20-25 minutes per game.

Not discounting him at all. Just because I don't think he's a starter doesn't mean he won't be a solid contributor. I can see 5-7 pts and 4 reb in 15ish minutes a night. That's a good get as a backup.
