I hope I'm wrong, but it looks like it's going to be a long season for the women hoopsters.

The team has signed two recruits: the previously mentioned Bower and Danni Scully out of Illinois. I had to go outside of our news release to see that Danni is a 6'1'' power forward. She also had offers from Valpo and Evansville. Bower happens to be the cousin of Olivia Bower and has other family who are former Ohio athletes.

Progress tonight from the ladies, even though the game was a bit similar to the Applachian State game. They played well enough to take almost a 20 point lead at one point. Dayton whittled it down to 11, the 110 started in to "winning team, losing team" despite Lou telling them to knock it off, and Dayton got the final margin to six.

Dayton's a big team so the girls got outrebounded by 16, but I was really impressed with how active they were defensively. They frustrated Dayton for three quarters and they just couldn't get much going. Another thing I was pleased to see is, everyone seemed confident in what they were doing. Last year with people just totally in new roles they weren't expected to be in, too often they would just look lost and not really even resemble a team. Tonight the pieces, even when things weren't going well, looked like they fit and flowed well together. Much unlike last year's jumbled, disjointed mess after the injuries.

Madi Mace comes across as super mature and she did the heavy lifting in the first half offensively. Her big knee brace is hard not to notice. She deserves to stay healthy. Cassidy Lafler didn't start which surprised me, especially against a team like this, but she looked like she's really worked hard to improve herself physically and I thought she did a solid job. Jaya McClure got to play but she didn't start but was the best player on the floor. Perhaps she's just getting worked back in and will start soon. All the freshmen that played looked like they belong. Monica Williams seemed to have the biggest impact, and Bailey Tabeling helped out in the post at times. She had a nice steal and coast to coast basket. Finally, Kennedi Watkins is a female Shereef Mitchell.

I don't have any idea how Dayton compares to the team that made the NCAA tournament two seasons ago. Their games were UConn and Lindenwood, two extremes that aren't much of a measuring stick. But a win's a win, and the Bobcats looked worse last season against worse competition. Despite there being so many new faces, they are certainly a team worth your time and treasure to support. They look like a team.

WxM: Thanks for the report. I'm kind of old school and can't really start getting into basketball until December, when the football regular season is over. I haven't yet attend a basketball game, but do plan to see the men on Saturday in person.

You have to believe McLure was hurt but we'll never know what it was. Guice must be too. Guice and Mace are the last remaining members of a group that we'll never know how good it could have been with just a normal amount of injuries. This is a crazy young team without Guice playing. I think that even Mace can come back for two more years if she wants but I'm not sure that I'd bet on that. Though the transfer Alper looks like she is contributing a good amount and I don't think she could come back next year it bodes pretty well for the future if they can just be competitive this year.

You need to hand it to the band for keeping some stuff going after the OZone died and before Chase brought it back but starting this really needs to be the decision of one person, and it needs to be agreed upon before the game starts, and obviously that person needs to have thought about making sure there is absolutely zero chance of a comeback. You can look on your phone and go to an app like ESPN and see when the win chance reached 99.9%. But that isn't good enough. That's 1000-1. There are several thousand games played every year and there are a handful where comebacks like that happen. Those games usually make SportsCenter or other national media. The last thing we need, if it were to ever happen to us, would be to have winning team/losing team on SportsCenter on top of the loss. I don't know what you can do about it though if a random fan just jumps in and starts it.

29 point loss at Morehead State. 29 is also the number of turnovers the team committed. Astonishing how fundamentally unsound we are in basic passing. It was as if everyone forgot to make a judgment on whether the defense can play the passing lane.

Women picked up a nice win against former Ohio assistant Kate Bruce's IUPUI Jaguars. It wasn't the cleanest game in the world, but it was a win. Newcomer and grad transfer Bengisu Alper broke the seal on the scoring with an opening three, and she made the play of the game by draining another three to put the Bobcats back up by five late. Still too many turnovers, and a lot of learning and growing yet to take place, but they could have let another double digit lead slip away, but didn't. OU shot over 50 percent from three in this game; IUPUI was in the teens.

Tough loss for the ladies to a Longwood team they could and should have beaten. The box score tells the tale: outrebounded 51-35, starters went 1/14 from 3, and the team made only 61% of their free throws. Ouch. With the caliber of teams on the rest of the non-conference schedule, mostly on the road, this sort of home loss represents a huge missed opportunity.

I can't get over how as a team, division 1 scholarship players are unable to shoot over 70% at the line, especially at home.

This is one of the poorest passing college basketball teams I've ever seen. Case in point, we're down late but play the fouling game right and even force a five second call. Down one with about eight seconds left, we're inbounding in our frontcourt and we try to fire it into the high post. An improbable pass to begin with when the person receiving the pass isn't a huge target, but then you have another defender a step away from the passing lane who intercepts it.

Agreed, from what I have seen there is a lot of panic, chuck and pray from most of the players when they get the ball. They are in desperate need of a true ball handler.

Bailey Tabeling came off the bench and hit her first five threes to defeat the Syracuse zone. The 5-1 Orange clearly frustrated and lead by only one at the half. Great basketball so far.

I was listening to the game while driving to the men's game. I didn't make it to the by the end. It sounded like a tale of two halves.

Bolden is now the program's leader in losses as well as wins.

Yes it's his roster, but it's at its youngest point in the development cycle. He's been at his worst a .500 coach until the barrage of adversity that was last year. Give him a chance to develop this group. If they don't step towards the upper third of the conference, then we can talk about moving on.

The first half was fun to watch. There were great drives to the bucket, really nice passing and they seemed to take quality shots. Clearly the frontline took over in the second half. A lot of promise from some young players. Anxious to see them again.

Let Boldon try to grow this young group. If he still isn't sniffing .500 in a few years, you have to consider making a move. I like everything I have seen from him but things seem to have gotten stale. It feels like we should have been able to springboard from that great team and reload but we've crashed and burned.
