Bobcats finished 3rd out of 8 teams behind Missouri and Old Dominion in a much improved MAC tournament over the weekend. If it was the MAC of a few years ago they would have won it as they finished ahead of Kent and Central Michigan which ruled the conference before the expansion. They had one champ, a runner up, three 3rds and two 4th place finishers and automatically qualified 5 for the NCAA. They could get more wrestlers in when the wildcards are announced.

The 3 additions have made the MAC a very strong conference. Mizzou is ranked 1st in the nation and dominated this tourney.

Congratulations Ohio with a decent showing. Most of the team returns next year and they should be even better.

TRIVIA QUESTION: This tourney was played in the Hearnes Fieldhouse in Columbia. Name the event that 1st opened this fieldhouse.

At 165, #16 seed Harrison Hightower had an OT win and then was eliminated with an OT loss to finish 2-2 in the tournament.
At 197, #14 Phillip Wellington was eliminated with his first match today. He finished 1-2 in the tournament.

All three remaining Ohio wrestlers lost in the fourth consolation round. Claxton lost in overtime, Chino lost 4-3 and Walters lost 3-0, so all three came up a win shy of placing. The positive is that all six national qualifiers are juniors except for Hightower, who is a senior.

With some exceptions the difference between placing as an all American and finishing in the round of 12 is razor thin. OU was one point, one move or one break away in several weight classes from placing. All but the seniors can build off that for next year.

First poll for the new season is out and OU is ranked 15th in the nation in preseason. WIN magazine has MAC schools Missouri at #7, Ohio 15th, Old Dominion 16th and Kent 20th in the team rankings. The team rankings are based on how many individuals each team has ranked in each of the 10 weight classes.

The Bobcat individuals ranked in the national top twenty in their respective weight classes are as follows. Spartak Chino at 157 and Phil Wellington at 197 are both ranked 6th, Cody Walters is 7th at 174, Tywan Claxton is 11th at 149 and Andrew Romanchik is 20th at 184.

It's pretty good to be returning five national qualifiers. Hopefully Ohio can be pretty strong in the other weight classes too.
