Bryan Vance from WOUB is reporting that Lilburn (GA) Parkview RB Chris Carson has committed to Ohio. Scout and Rivals listed Carson with offers from Akron, Buffalo, Charlotte, Colorado St., FIU, Indiana, Miami (FL), Middle Tennessee St., Kent St., Maryland, South Florida, Texas St. and Troy.

6'1", 200 lbs.? Sub-4.5 forty? Yes, please.

But this fills up the class right? 19 verbals or 19 slots  (20 seniors but T. Carrie comig back)? And barring a surprise, no CB. And no kicker on scholarship, and no schollies for walk-ons. Hmmmm.....

If you check my class grid on the recruiting page, you'll count 63 scholarships for non-seniors. Add one for Carrie and you have 64. So there would technically be 21 available. But given that the coaches probably are aware of some attrition that will happen with the 64 and that not all commits will show up, they could probably sign 4 or 5 more to the 19 they already have.

Seems like the type of physical runner that certain posters have been looking for.  Also, add another 3* recruit to this years class

Scouting report from ESPN:

Carson is a big, tough back with the upper body playing strength to run over opponent's when in traffic. Has the size and athleticism for the running back position at the major level of competition. His frame looks very capable of supporting additional bulk over time provided athleticism isn't compromised. Displays the initial quickness and vision needed to locate and get into creases; attacks the line of scrimmage with a downhill, upright running style; gets to the second level in a hurry, demonstrating the foot quickness needed to make defenders miss in space. Does a nice job picking and sliding away from traffic and although we don't see a burst or second gear, this back has the playing speed to score from inside the plus forty yard line. We see some hip tightness and the need to run over his pads when in traffic; appears to be more of a carry the load, between the tackles, power back at the next level, capable of shortening the game in the fourth quarter. Demonstrates good potential as a check down, slot receiver, is effective running the screen and drag route, showing the ability to settle into open areas. His hands appear natural and relaxed; demonstrates the athleticism and concentration needed to adjust to the high, out of the frame throw. If pass blocking skills can be developed, there is potential to stay on the field in long yardage situations. Carson does not appear to be an immediate starter at the BCS level of play. Some time may be needed to polish his skills.

What's the chance this guy has the grades required...or test scores? If last year taught me anything, it's that Frank and crew are willing to take a chance (or two or three) on partial qualifiers. Anyone can SAY they are gonna show up at Taco Johns for Taco Tuesday. But only some make it. Wake me up when he's popping a Potato Ole into his mouth.

Not sure. But given the number of schools recruiting him and that Indiana was one of them, I would assume he's a qualifier.

Wow, very impressive back. I like his quick acceleration to the line, and decisive moves, plus good balance. Also, he wasn't playing against slouches - those were good defensive players.

Rated:
3 stars 5.5 by Rivals
2 stars ranked 137th best RB in the country by Scout
3 Stars 76 by ESPN and ranked 76th best in the country
3 Stars 87 by 247Sports, and ranked 45th best RB

With Carson and Dorian Brown, this is an awesome class for running backs. Now that Ohio's offensive line is dominant, it isn't surprising that the Backs are noticing. I have been surprised it took this long, but things are looking good.

Ahh, gotcha. I was just looking at the seniors.Your grid is also missing Venham at punter, so that would be one of the 21 as well. But you're right, after last year's class, gotta anticipate a couple of these guys not showing up, so might as well sign  few extra.

I hope we get that cornerback and that no one is a decommit or non-qualifier....if so this could be one of OUr best classes.

Hopefully we can redshirt Carson and Brown and that they'll be ready when Boykin and Beau exit the program.  The 2 true freshman can run inside.....especially Carson who has that great glide lateral side step that is so quick that he gets into the hole quickly.....excellent vision and tough to bring down as well.

Opponents may think they're in for a rest when Boykin and Beau leave....doesn't look that way.  Brown and Carson will team with Daz and Hammond to make a more than formidable inside/outside running game.

Also, keep in mind that there were an incredible number of season ending injuries last year, and many of those had surgery. Not everyone has a complete recovery, and returns; sometimes there is additional attrition. Also, sometimes existing players fail to meet grades requirements, or get homesick and leave. The coaches have more up-to-date information than we do, and historically they will offer 1-2 more players than we, as fans, expect.

I do expect Venham will get one, and so will the Amicone-Yazdani winner. Start with Ted's 63, and add Carrie, Venham, and a placekicker, and there is room for 19, so I would guess that 19 is the minimum they would offer, but the number could come in at 20-21. We are at 19 now, so we might be done, or we may get 1-2 more.

Paul, welcome back.  I hope you changed your mind and decided to watch the Independance Bowl.  It went well for Ohio.  Oh, and I can report to you, the kids you predicted would suffer "the depression of watching us try and play football." It was not like that at all.  Great day really.  Seems recruiting is another part of Ohio football you "could not be less interested in."  As for waking you, signing day is Wednesday, February 6th, set your own alarm.

Watching all the injuries turn the Bobcats from a top-of-the-MAC to a top-half-of-the-MAC team was disappointing for the fans, so you have to expect some frustration. I hope I never see that many season ending injuries again in two years combined, much less a single year. In the meantime, I try to keep in mind that as bad as it was for fans, it had to be a hundred times worse for the players. They should be proud of how they re-grouped and played an outstanding game in the bowl, and that sets the tone for another good year in 2013.

For those that think that in the last decade Ohio's recruiting hasn't been as good as you'd like, I hope they keep in mind that Ohio had the best record in the MAC with those players. What will they do with the likes of Carson? The recruiting seems to get better every year (expect 2010), and this looks like the best class yet.

I agree. He reminds me a little of Beau, in that he's got a quick first step, he's decisive, and always moving forward. He's not going to get tackled for a loss very often. Also like Beau he's got great balance and determination, and doesn't go down easily. I think he has more shiftiness and speed that Beau, though. He's going to be a good one.

The other thing I noticed is that those were good players he was running against. We weren't looking at 40 yard run after 40 yard run. The defenses were sound, and the tackling was good - he just got yards anyway.

One site has him as a 4.84 40, can't be that high can it? Maybe why the report doesn't talk about blazing speed.

ESPN has the 4.84, while Rivals has 4.50. When different sites are that far apart on the same guy, it makes you question how accurate their numbers ever are. Beau isn't the fastest running back in the conference, and McRae wasn't, either so pure speed isn't the only thing you want in an a running back.

Can you imagine their numbers if they had 4.4 or 4.5 speed?

I thought it would be a bit presumptuous to compare him to this other Solich-coached running back, who also had power, good balance, spin moves, but was never the fastest player on the field. As a side note, Monroe will appreciate the fullback block at  1:22.

Carson seems to have similar lateral moves......maybe faster than Rozier......as good as?........stay tuned.
