Moving this from another thread:

Here's an approximate mix of what I'd like to see in this class:
QB - 2
RB - 2
WR - 2
TE - 2
OL - 2
Total Offense - 10

DT - 3
DE - 1
OLB - 3
CB - 2
S - 1
Total Defense - 10

With an exciting start to this recruiting class, the QB and DB positions are in good shape. There is still a need for some skill players, in a running back or two, some wide receivers, and a corner, but the big needs I see are tight ends, defensive line, and some outside linebackers.

I have to admit, it's depressing to see Toledo already at 14. That said, I trust we will get it done.

One month's sample too small to tell... How do we compare to the other better teams in MAC at this point?

The quality is very high, the quantity is on the low side.

Thanks for the link, L.C.

But disagree about the quality being that high. 7 teams with more 3-star guys than we have.

I understand that we have a lot more open spots than most of those 7, but still...

I don't care if we have two as long as they are quality. I believe late signees are better than early signees. I love our first four.

allen. Thank you. Very insightful. I agree. Early signees are nearly always high school stars, often older (having essentially red-shirted in primary/secondary school) who have less upside than players who are coming on in their senior seasons. These late comers often will develop more at the next level. Joe Flading as my best example.

Late signees from 2016 were; Harris, Trotter, Fernandez and Mustin-Sherman. Carrie and Brazill are other examples of late signees.

Look at the column "Average Rating". If you order by that column, WMU is at 81.82, while Ohio is at 81.22, followed by BG at 80.05, then Toledo at 79.39. Based on average rating, Ohio is second in the MAC, barely behind the leader.

Another way to look at it is to look at the average points awarded, and divide by the number of players. For Ohio you get 11.13. Second in the MAC is BG at 8.38, far behind. All the other leaders are between 6.8 and 7.7. Thus Ohio is way, way ahead in this rating. Why? I believe the "Points" are awarded partly based on need, or perhaps more points are awarded for certain positions than others. Ohio's class not only has highly rated players, the players are in positions of critical need, and are exactly what Ohio needs.

There is no question that the quality is high so far. The question is, can they fill the class with more guys like these first three?

L.C., current count as noted above is 4 guys. Are you going by something else? I think your numbers are going to change when you include Tariq Drake.

Ah, yes, I forgot him. I like him a lot, but he isn't rated, so the numbers will fall some.

How now are we doing vs. our MAC peers, espec given the no recent commitments?

Again, even if our average rating is high, so few names have to mean...at this point...that others have brought in more for the good future than we have.

Prior four years, an average of about 12 commits stated thru July. A flood coming over the next week?

Or delay as we feel comfortable with who's on hand now such that we're really aiming high this year and, so, in pursuing guys likely to have many good offers, we have to wait and see?

If I read this right, the last recruit announcement was on June 14? (I'm using the date of Ted's last edit of the lead post in this thread.)

Can't think it's a good sign that no news since then...two full months?!!

If quantity was "on the low side" a while ago, what is it now?

What's the easiest way to see the recruiting status of our peer MACs?

WMU at 24, Miami at 13

I see a tweet with a picture of a player today with a 93 jersey under the W17NESS label. I didn't think that teams could say anything about a recruit until signing day. Does this count as saying anything?
Anyway, they've done several if these without any word of commitment. Looks like a defensive end which would be nice.

Five 3-star guys is a start but it is not enough. I still say we need TEN 3-star guys three or four years in a row to get to the top level of the MAC. That is pretty much the WMU route.

Gimme one...gimme one legit four star guy at a key position so we can have a sparkling year.

Even with a lot of 3-star guys, this staff seems eminently capable of not separating from the MAC pack.

To be honest, do ANY legitimate, true 4 star players sign with anyone in the MAC?

yes every year, WMU got two last year. Broback the EMU QB was one. If you a QB and a MAC school has good position players, alpha QB's see an opportunity to play right away and put the program on their back, you have to sell it. You can get wide receivers as well if you have a QB that throws a lot. https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/26050

The question is how legitimate is the four-star rating. Roback's other offers were from Ohio, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Miami and Toledo. Realistically, I don't think MAC schools can get true four-star players unless there is some other factor as to why major schools are opting not to offer (grades, legal issues, etc.).

Excellent point. Stars mean very little. It is telling that every P5 school passed on this **** rated player. Further there were twelve players rated below him taken by the P5s. Stars mean very little.

he had late offers from Wisconsin. He is a pretty good player in the MAC in just his second year, the fours stars are warranted here.
