If CMU's coaching staff allowed a coach from another school onto their sidelines to steal signals of an opponent, that seems pretty bad to me.

My first thought was how much did Michigan pay the coaching staff at CMU?
You simply cannot convince me that this guy was able to essentially prance up and down the sidelines the first week of the season unnoticed.
The sunglasses appeared to have a lens from what is floating around on twitter.
He literally looks like he's wearing a disguise.
This stinks to high heavens and I had my doubts on the entire scandal when it first surfaced. Now I'm thinking its 10x worse.

Well, I looked at these photos myself and I'm not so sure it was mistaken identity. There is something *very* weird about this whole alleged scandal.

Then it shouldn't matter if everyone knows we are going to run it up the middle huh? When it's OHIO calling plays you marvel at how everyone knows whats coming and how bad it is. But when defending Michigan, it doesn't matter, because you still have to stop it,. Interesting

One solution would be to do like the pros and lets QB's and the defensive the captain have a "speaker" in their helmet.

OK great but there are NCAA rules against in-person scouting, and rules against recording signals. And definitely rules against giving coaching credentials to a coach from an entirely different university.
What impact it had on their success is fairly irrelevant. To me these are pretty bold repeated deliberate NCAA violations.

Teams ARE stopping our run up the middle and we're still doing it constantly... so... we should... adjust...? I'm not mad at the teams stopping us...? HUH? I'm mad at our staff for constantly doing it...?

Grambling and Southern used it in a game last year. Both teams said it was hugely successful.
Apparently, there were talks happening in the SEC, but they couldn't guarantee helmet safety and modifying helmets would void safety warranties and open up lawsuits down the line. There's no collective bargaining agreement or players union in college.
Also, from this article from 2022 and very timely now...
"Another concern among some SEC coaches wasn’t expressed publicly but has been suspected privately: Headsets would eliminate the ability to steal signals. The concept of stealing signals is an open secret in coaching, and some programs have elaborate operations. In a sport in which most rule changes benefit the offense, this could put the sides on the same level of an issue.
Told of that suspicion, David Shaw said it was comforting to hear someone admit that stealing signals exists. Bielema brought it up as well.
“There are certain places that put a premium on stealing signals, and that gets some people known as great play callers, but you can be a great play caller if you know what the other team is doing,” Shaw said. “For me, this is one of those balancing things. You might not be able to get all the information you want, now you have to call the game with some doubt and trust in your preparation and your players.”

Presumably Michigan didn't know the signals before they sent a guy to go specifically focus on stealing the signals.
So I'm not sure "this information was viewable by millions" is a super compelling defense. Michigan did this, no? What's that tell you about what it takes to figure out the signals, and the benefit it offers?

In the prior three years, they were 21-11 overall and 16-8 in league play.”
"Coaches used words like "tainted," "fraudulent" and "unprecedented" to describe the alleged scheme during the call, according to Thamel’s report, which says there was “anger interspersed throughout the call.”
"People don't understand the seriousness of it,” one source in the ESPN report said. "How it truly impacted the game plan. To truly know if it's a run or a pass, people don't understand how much of an advantage that was for Michigan."

Yep, and interesting that the one loss was an opponent they did not have the opportunity to really advance scout to steal the signs. like I tried to point out earlier, their are people here saying this doesn't matter because you still have to stop it. But then complain about our play calling because the defense knows what we are doing. It don't work both ways, saying it doesnt matter here, but it does there. Makes me shake my head.

How many spitballs have been thrown in MLB since they were outlawed that the umpire didn't notice? Some rather famous pitchers have been accused of throwing the spitter. In fact, there have been autobiographies where a player has admitted that the spitter was his go-to pitch in clutch situations. Of course, this was only revealed after the player had retired. So, my question is, in what way is the Michigan sign stealing, assuming the allegations are true, worse than throwing an illegal spitter?

One way it's potentially worse is that it appears to be orchestrated by the coaching staff, which might not be true of a spitballing pitcher. It also impacts every game and the whole defense. A more effective form of cheating potentially orchestrated at a high level.
