They don’t have the players they need to put up a fight I guess. They better figure out a way to handle the portal better. Not before bowl games or ?

I don't see how they will find a replacement. Most, if not all schools, finished up exams last week and everyone is home for Christmas.

Crazy times.

Have the Bobcats take their place after the win in Orlando with no cut to the MAC and earmark all the dough after expenses to paying OUr players and add to the NIL football pot for next year. Too many games you say, well I think the winners of the playoffs have a few more. Also get to see coach Smith in action one more time before backing up the little Brinks truck to him....

I don’t know how possible this is, but this idea is absolute genius. I’d say we get that out there and if it doesn’t happen, it at least shows we are progressive.

La Tech stepped up to the plate. Makes sense.

Great idea though.

Marshall still has about 71 players on their roster from the past season. They're choosing not to play this game so they don't get embarrassed (as opposed to "we can't safely field a team" reasons). The rest of the college football world should still assess Marshall a forfeit over this, give them a 10-4 final record.

At this moment, Marshall is down to 41 players (only 3 offensive linemen) available for this game. Besides the portal players, a lot of players have left since finals are over. If you are looking at the roster on Herdzone, it hasn't been updated since to September.

I think I heard that you also lost all your quarterbacks. No offensive line and no quarterbacks would certainly have made a bowl game "interesting", so you chose wisely in declining to go.

I'm sorry for your loss of players. I think that's going to become a standard cost of coaching changes in the future. When a school brings in a new coach from the outside, I think that it will be standard for a significant number of players to bail. We see the same thing happening at Charlotte. It hasn't happened at Ohio, at least not yet, because it appears that the lead candidate for head coach is a person the players know.

Some basically hinted at this. Maybe we can grab a great bobcat son out of this mess.

Too bad. It would've been a good matchup. But with their current situation, getting absolutely throttled by Army wouldn't do much for recruiting. I think we benefited in recruiting last year by destroying GaSo with mostly seconds and thirds on our depth chart.

It does put Ohio's losses last year into perspective. Ohio was hit hard, but it was dispersed across all positions, so the only position that was hit really, really hard was Tight End, a positions where Ohio could game plan around the losses.

I saw a post where Charlotte is down to 32 scholarship players. That means they need to add 73 scholarship players to their team in one offseason. No idea how many incoming freshman they have. UAB has lost almost all of its two-deep.

Guess it could be us in a few weeks.

Wonder if it could just be like youth sports. G5 could be 18U and P4 20U lol.

The NCAA VERY MUCH needs to sort out this ridiculous portal calendar.

There is no reason they can't move it back after the bowl games are played. Spring semester doesn't start until Jan 13.

Now you have teams preparing for bowl games with interim coaches, navigating the holidays, searching for coaches, reaching out to portal players, and recruiting your own kids to stay... all while you're interviewing... and you have until 3 days after Christmas to do it.

Who even is reaching out to kids in the portal? I presume no one. Hey it's Julie. Love your tape. Wanna come play for a coach to be determined later? No? Okay! Thanks!

Then a coach does get hired - especially if they're outside the program - they have to move here, get the lay of the land, hit the media circuit, hire other coaches, then start reaching out to players... by December 28.

You have to have the portal in this window to give student athletes, a chance to enroll in spring semester and be eligible for spring practice. Having a portal after spring semester is started students miss a semester of school and thenjeopardize eligibility.

More importantly, miss Spring practice! Their scholarships at their respective schools are annual. Nothing would prevent them from attending their current school to maintain eligibility, but the coaches deep down would rather deal with this than not have a full Spring practice.

Some schools start Jan. 4/Jan. 6 & that's the problem; it's not the same across the board. Jan. 6, Jan. 13 or Jan. 20 ... in pro sports, everyone is in sync so the free agent period can be the same. Tougher in Professional College Sports.

How about the backup QB at Penn State that just flew the coop? One play away and he could be starting in the playoffs. But, nope, off to the Portal Olympics

Good point. I figure one proposal to fix this will actually require member schools to start their winter semester no earlier than Jan. 15 or so.

Not opening the portal until after bowl games is fine as long as coaches can't leave for other jobs during that same period.

Marshall loses to Vermont in the men's soccer national championship. To their credit, they knocked off #1 Ohio A&M in the final four

I've seen crazier things happen.
