I know we could add a few more players….but I have my two new players so far who should start and do well.

Defense-Safety Dustin Johnson-Northern Colorado

We lose some impact tacklers and this guy will fill the loss of Walter Reynolds who was great. At 6’1”200 he has 4.5 speed and with a few more pounds would be a heck of a linebacker. Anyone who can make 85 tackles on a D1 team has to be considered. You only need a few minutes of his video to know he has it…whatever it is….maybe it’s football instinct.

Offense-Gunnar Gundy-Wuarterback-Oklahoma State

A 6’2-210 Quarterback with D1 experience is what we need and Gunnar fits the bill. Not sure about Harris playing but Navarro would be fine with me….however Gunnar could beat him out. Parker is a tailback playing QB. Gunnar can throw the long ball which not sure who caused the lack of it for us last year….but with playing calling or injury to Kurtis it just wasn’t there. He can also run as his last Ok.St TD was a 10 yard run. Jacoby Jones and Hendricks will love this guy. Some will say no offers or schollie…but he had Toledo and Central Michigan offers….no schollie but he didn’t need it as his dad was coach. More than one Cowpoke fan has said they thought he should have been the number one QB and not rotated. We have some new Bobcat fans from Oklahoma as they love him.

I honestly think the two returning safeties in Austin Brawley and Adonis Williams will both be slotted for breakout years. Both dealt with injuries during the season and missed games because of it. With a full season I can see the 2 leading the defense next year as both at true juniors with plenty of experience. Jeremiah Wood was also granted a 7th year so he will be back but I’m curious if he will play safety like last season while Brawley was injured or Linebacker like at the beginning of his career with the addition of Dustin and us losing Thompson and Houston.

Dustin saw some pretty good ball in the Big Sky considering their champion Montana played for the natty last weekend.

Gundy in town gives me some peace of mind about the QB room going into the offseason/spring camp. Nothing to lose and everything to gain IMHO. I'd imagine his physical limitations are the key reason why he was on the sidelines in Stillwater but given his pedigree I would image he has a pretty high football IQ as he was probably watching film in diapers and his physical tools are probably still quite good I bet. Depending how the roster evolves in the coming months he has a good chance to earn QB1.

Navarro executed a good game plan against GATA but I don't know if he is our best option for 12 (and hopefully 14!) games.

While I have mixed feelings about the transfer portal, it does add a fun wrinkle to pass the time and keep football top on mind during the offseason.
