Not really upsetting to lose these mid-week games, especially when it's at the hands of the back end of the pitching staff like this one. But holy crap, I do not recall a collapse bigger than this at any level. Up 12-4 going into the bottom of the 8th and the Bobcats give up 9 in one inning and lose 13-12.

The worst part is the inning started with a ground out, then a strike out but the batter reached on a drop 3rd strike with Collin Sells (top bullpen arm) on the mound. After a single, they got a groundout and it was 2 outs with runners on 2nd & 3rd and an EIGHT run lead. Then it went:

Walk
Grand Slam
SUB Kelly for Sells
Homer
Walk
Walk
HBP
Grand Slam
Walk
SUB Horwedel for Kelly
Walk
Strike out

Yes, 9 runs on 2 grand slams and a solo blast. 4 hits in the inning. This is definitely a game that those Morehead boys will NEVER forget and tell their grandkids about. And it's a game where our guys will have nightmares for decades.

Interesting statistical point - Because the Dropped 3rd strike was scored as a wild pitch instead of a passed ball, all runs were earned even though if the K had stood, it would have been a scoreless inning.

I don't have anything to add about that performance. You covered it all. But I do have a tangent thought that this kind of outcome is exactly why following the "unwritten" rules is BS in a sport like baseball. If you have that big lead, steal that base, swing on 3-0, bunt. With no clock, you never know.

I hate to mix sports, but this reminds me of the another epic collapse. It was in the second round of the NCAA basketball tournament in 1960. OHIO is up 20 points at half time on Georgia Tech. It's looking like we are going to face the Evil Empire (O$U) in the Elite 8 round. However, the Rambling Wrecks slowly ate into that halftime cushion and take the lead for the first time with under a minute to go. In my mind this was the most epic collapse in our basketball history. Keep in mind that this was before the three-point shot, and a 20 point lead was much more difficult to overcome in those days. This baseball collapse certainly gives the 1960 basketball collapse a run for its money.

A collapse like that is truly remarkable. Not sure I've even seen something like that in youth baseball.

It'd be one thing if the inning was full of hits but only 4 hits.

The sequence from Kelly may be the worst pitching performance I've ever seen/heard of. That's not a knock on him (he'll bounce back, kid is a solid D1 bullpen arm), I'm truly impressed. The odds of a 6 batter sequence like that has to be near impossible.

I mean think about it:

First batter...bomb. Not totally uncommon, get the next guy and we're ok.

Followed by immediately loading the bases with BB,BB,HBP. I think I'm pulling him after that second walk.

After hitting the next guy to load the bases, the baseball Gods were really paying attention now.

Boom...salami #2 of the inning...things can't possibly get any worse for one guy, right?!

Wrong.

Goes on to walk the next guy and finally gets pulled.

While there is not a single excuse in the world to blow this lead, I think the pitching could've been handled a little better in this situation. Morehead St. is known to be a high power offense that routinely is towards the top of most offensive categories in the NCAA.

Have you ever seen Morehead State's stadium, Allen Field? It's very short to right field, maybe less than 300 feet. I'm guessing it's like 430 to left center. I can't find actual dimensions. I think they try to keep them secret.

Take a look on Google maps with satellite view: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Allen+Field/@38.1929762,-83.4266031,154m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x88440d8b9afa25cd:0xe9dde9ecbeb1782a!8m2!3d38.192972!4d-83.4260559

It looks that way, but using Google Map's measuring tool, right field doesn't get under 300'. The deepest part in left center is about 385'

Wow that is super weird! I don't understand why they kept going in Left Center...it doesn't appears to be a multi-use field. At least with RF you can see there was a property line issue.

It does appear the fence extends up high like the green monster.

Both teams played on the same field.

I don't think anybody is saying that it's unfair. I was curious and the epic meltdown we had included one HR to center, and the other 2 HRs were to left center. The short RF didn't play a part in this collapse. However, I would expect Morehead may try to recruit more lefties than normal...although counting switch hitters, they only have 3 more lefties on their roster than Ohio does.
