I watched the entire match and can't say enough good things about the way our girls played. BYU's announcers had nothing but great things to say about our Cats. Our girls had no fear. Our first set was amazing and so was our entire game. National runner up last year, and we played wih them in their house every set. Girls all alumni are proud!

Agreed. Never gave up and showed a lot of heart. The BYU play-by-play crew was complimentary and I think impressed.

Very proud of the VB BOBCATS. Good experience for the squad. To many serving errors against a very good squad. This has been a problem all year.

I feel that Coach Dean will continue to push for team and individual performances. Looking for next year.

I don't watch much volleyball, so I ask out of a genuine quest for knowledge...

1. Seemed like we went away from the quick sets after they were so successful in the first game. Why? Or did BYU just do something to take it away?

2. Why do teams work so hard to spike from the corners, leaving you only one direction to go? If you set to the middle don't you have more choices? Wouldn't that make it harder to block if the defender had to guess? if they send two blockers you leave more gaps? Just wondering.

Hopefully some others chime in as I'm no expert but seemed to me serve receive after first set went downhill. If your setter has to keep chasing the ball to set she doesn't have many options.

That being said the girls had a great season and proud of them. Definitely top 25 team imo.

Next year will be a real challenge replacing a first team MAC setter and first team MAC libero - arguably, the best two at their position in the MAC, plus two middle blockers. That's a lot to replace.

Your outside hitters are typically your more skilled hitters.. You don't have to just hit it one way. You can hit a line shot or a cross shot. Middles are generally your taller girls who can slam, but might not have as much precision with their hits. As another poster said though, it really depends on your serve/receive (passes).. That dictates a lot of what your setter can do.

agree completely. Erica Walker should be more than capable at libero, but she's replacing perhaps the best in program history. I don't think anyone knows what to expect at setter. '16 may be the most challenging year for this program since the beginning of the Carlston era...

First of all, congratulations for a great season, and I would like to personally thank the team for the enjoyment I received from watching the team play all season long.

Playing in BYU's gym is very hard, and playing at an altitude of 4500 feet presents problems. I have lived in Denver, and when I went jogging it was as if I was breathing like I was running. Also, there are a lot more home runs at Coors field in Denver because the air is thinner and the ball sails. I can't imagine trying to adjust my serve to accommodate this on such short notice.

However, there is just a tinge of disappointment after watching the match. The post game press conference Alexis Gray quote was "I just felt we just believed in ourselves a little more."

http://byucougars.com/video/w-volleyball/wvb-beats-ohio-3...

On espn's series 30 for 30 they featured Jim Valvano's North Carolina State Wolfpack 1983 NCAA champion basketball team.

http://espn.go.com/30for30/film?page=survive%20and%20advance

The one thing I remember is them having one practice during the regular season where all they did was cut down the nets, visualizing being champions. I think that we need to find a way to have the we deserve to win tonight mentality.

No disrespect meant.
Again, thanks for a great season. ON Saturday night BYU swept Western Kentucky (25-23, 25-17, 25-20), and will play number four Nebraska next week.

Selective comments from the volleytalk message board from fans watching our match against BYU:

Ohio looks very good early quick offense good defense. Up 9-7 early.

Mallory Salis is on fire for Ohio. 7 kills on the outside. Ohio up 23-18.

Bobcats win set 1 BYU struggled with the speed of the Ohio offense in that set.

Ohio defense is amazing.

Ohio plays really fast their offense has the BYU defense scrambling.

major homecooking going on this game.

BYU wins second set. 25-23. Tune in if you aren't this is high quality volleyball. Ashy at libero and Salis on the Outside maybe the two best players in the country you have never heard of. Ohio is really good, giving BYU all they can handle. Without Boswell BYU wouldn't be in it she is the hot hand.

That one kill she hit cross court left a dent in the floor she is way too good.( referring to Salis)

BYU wins set three on an Alexa Gray bomb. 25-17. BYU leads 2 sets to 1.

Ohio not going away up 15-12 in the 4th. Salis, Ohio setter Gilleland, and Ashy are all very good.

BYU has always been about home cookin' calls and cheap shots when it comes to their sports teams.

BYU wins 26-24. Boswell has career high 18ks.

Credit Ohio one of the most fun matches I have seen this season. They played their hearts out. Ashy, Salis are some of the best in the country. That fast offense was good.BYU was good but I don't know not at home I am not sure they win this match.

Does anyone here know if BYUtv is an in-house production? That was the best production value for a college match I've ever watched, whether it be streamed or televised. Well done BYU.

It is in house. I agree I have seen many of their matches before, they are always of good quality. I especially appreciate the commentary. It is rarely biased and they give credit to both teams and are knowledgeable.

what really killed Ohio was service errors over 10 in the match, they certainly had their opportunities. The crowd certainly helped BYU. This match could has easily been 3-1 win for Ohio. Speaks great of them and their program.

I had no idea if BYU could beat Ohio. In all of the matches I've seen BYU play against quick offenses this season, they have struggled. I've seen them be able to adjust enough to get some blocks or soft blocks in later sets, but I didn't think they'd faced an offense this fast and this accurate. They generally get out-blocked in matches against fast offenses, so I was expecting that last night. From watching Ohio defeat (or dismantle might be a more appropriate term) Northern Illinois in the Mid-American Conference Championships, I knew their setter and libero were very good, but seeing them play in person is so much better. They are both amazing. The whole team defense by Ohio is just outstanding. They adjust better than any team I have seen this year. Their mentality on the court is fantastic as well. I was expecting to be impressed by them, but they still blew me away with their volleyball last night.

Agreed on the broadcast. Knowledgeable announcers with real voices, instant replay, and good graphics. It was like watching network tv.

Wish Ohio had the quality of that stream. Nothing against the people who work our streams (announcers included) but that BYU stream made ours look sad.

What Ohio does in terms of Media and coverage is outstanding. BYU's media is HEAVILY funded they have their own Channel on directv for god's sake. For the most part students have a huge part in Ohio's sports media and they do a great job for a college production.

I agree. Although there were tons of awkward crowd shots. They'd put a camera on someone and they'd act like their name just called on The Price is Right. Reminded me of propaganda films after awhile.

I didn't see the BYU match but I'm betting that the match was somewhat like the women basketball players in the NCAA's last spring vs. Arizona State.

Our talent may have been somewhat less than the other side, but not in any meaningful way. It just seemed that Ariz State was used to playing at a higher level than we were. It's the MAC competition vs. the competition in 'bigger' conferences. We can dominate the MAC at a level of play that doesn't have us necessarily ready to consistently compete with the top 20 teams.

VOLLEYBALL and WOMEN BASKETBALL both very good call.
