In Lexington, Friday at 5.

Mutual opponents:

 Oregon: OHIO wins 3-0 away

                MSU  wins  3-1  at home

 Michigan: OHIO loses 3-2 away

MSU loses 3-1 at home; wins 3-0 away

Eastern Michigan: OHIO wins 3-1 away; wins 3-0 in tourney

                                    MSU wins 3-0 at home

MSU will be tough and favorites, but this is a winnable game for the Bobcats.

    Go OHIO

Functionally, what seed does this make us...thoughts?

Did the loss to VCU (didn't make tourney, apparently) have any effect?

GO BOBCATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's hard to say. Only 16 of 64 teams get seeded... we're probably somewhere around the middle, so 7-9. The VCU match probably didn't change anything; they like to put teams that are fairly close geographically. We weren't going to get a seed, so we were travelling. Lexington is very close so I hope a lot of Ohio fans are able to make it. UK isn't unbeatable by any stretch if we get by the Spartans, and I sure would love another Sweet 16 banner.

I thought the team would end up at State College to be honest.  Good luck ladies.

I actually think Sparty is a tougher team than Kentucky. Way more battle tested and play in a MUCH better conference. You play 1 and sometime 2 ranked teams in the B1G every weekend during conference play. Ouch.

Interesting storyline I'm looking forward to-Michigan State is led by former NIU outside hitter and 2-time MAC Player of the Year Lauren Wicinski, who transferred to MSU because she wanted to play in a better conference. Wicinski has flourished at Michigan State, but she did not have much success in postseason matches in her two years against OHIO. Completely different Bobcat team, but I think it will be in the back of Wicinski's mind.

Similar scenario for Serena Warner who left OHIO to play for Oregon so she could play in the 'big-time',  for the NCAA national champion runner-up. In her 1st match there, it was a 3-0 smack down by the Bobcats.

Kentucky was the 15 seed, so Ohio is grouped with one of the lower-rated teams that earned a seed. Michigan State is #28 in the RPI and Ohio is #40. Duquesne, Kentucky's opponent, is #93. If Ohio does make it through, Penn State would be the likely foe in the Sweet 16.

I think Ohio State was the #15 seed in 2005, no?

OSU was the #13 seed in the pod with Marshall, Bama, and the Cats.

A few other observations:

In the 2nd match Friday eve in Lexington, Kentucky takes on Duquesne, the Atlantic 10 champions. The Dukes outside hitter, Marah Farage, transferred from OHIO and it has paid off for her as she is their starting outside hitter and made the tourney team. During Senior Night at the Convo a few weeks ago, her parents traveled from NE Ohio to escort Liis Kullerkann onto the court as her “American parents”. Marah is a wonderful young lady who has represented both OHIO and Duquesne well, both on and off the court. If you’re at the tourney, give her a shout-out.

My recollection is the last time OHIO played in the NCAA tourney, there were 4 teams representing the state of Ohio. This year there is only one. And that team is not you, Bucknuts!

Michigan State wins, 3-0. All three were closely contested.

I watched the webcast and it was good quality.

Mal Salis was not able to play due to the concussion symptoms from the VCU match.  That left a big hole in the game plan.  They played tough but too many obstacles to overcome.

MState got a lot of solid blocks...we didn't hit real well from the sides because of their defense...MState saved a lot of out slam attempts...MState had some solid hammer throwers.  Difficult to believe that MState lost 11 times this year.  I think they'll do well in the tourney.

We're pretty young and will be back.

Keep it up, ladies!

Michigan State really had it out for the state of Ohio.

Yes, their blockers were big, talented and played well, and we couldn't handle Wicinski, former MAC Player of the Year. But OHIO gave them a contest in all 3 sets. MSU then took down Kentucky to win the bracket. The Big 10 is one of the 2 premier conferences in volleyball along with the PAC 12. They have 7 teams that made it to the sweet 16, pretty amazing.

Congratulations for a  great season OHIO. It was a blast following you all season. Conference and tourney banners will be hung next Fall. And the future looks very bright.

What you didn't point out is that after MichState beat us 3-0, they beat 'tucky 3-1 and then lost to PennState 3-1.  That would be the PennState that won the tournament.
