Friday 7 Bradley
Sat. 12:30 Loyola Md.
Sat. 7 Tennessee Tech

A winnable weekend. Based on games so far, Loyola seems the strongest team. Despite losses to WVU and perennial power Penn St. they managed to win two sets against WVU and 1 against Penn State, which says they have some talent.

Looks like we lost one we could have won against Tennessee Tech. I didn't see the Tennessee Tech match, but hopefully we lost this one and will learn from it.

The offense at times looked great, but there were periods of ineptness. There seems to be a propensity for the setter to feed the left outside hitter, who more than not seems to have two defenders on her. Maybe someone can explain this to me?

The good is compared to last year we are way ahead and have shown signs of dominance at times. The bad is we lost a match that I would have thought we should have won. JMHO

That was Ohio alum and former rowdy O Zone member Zach Weinberg on the Tennessee Tech staff.

I find it interesting and a bit unusual, that the tourney winner Tenn.Tech got swept by Bradley, the team we swept on Friday. Matchup differences or just a bad day at the office?

Disclaimer: I did not see the match, but can offer a couple of possible explanations for more sets to the outside (left side):

1. When the setter is in the front row, the offense has basically only two attack options, vs. three blockers on the other side. Depending on the play call, both attackers may be in front of the setter (left side) unless the middle runs a "slide" (play in which the attacker goes to the right side and receives a "back set" from the setter).

2. Pass off target. If the pass from the back row pulls the setter off the net, the set options are often only to the front of the setter. Even if the offense has three attackers on the front row, a bad pass can virtually eliminate a back side option, allowing the opposing blockers to cheat over and create a three blocker vs. two attacker situation...
