That other Green & White team just down Rts. 33 & 7 from Athens just defeated Indiana 1-0 in OT to win its first national championship in an NCAA D1 sport. Great game. Go Herd!

We really need to chant “Soccer school!” the next time we beat them.

Marshall has a hell of a coach. Coach Grassie also won a Division II Championship at U of Charleston WV AKA Morris Harvey. MU also defeated the Number 1 seed of the tournament and the defending National Champion on their way to win the National Championship.

23 foreign students and many are transfers. So, they are spending a lot of cash on recuriting.

Good for them. Didn’t Akron win it sometime this century? It shows that almost anyone can win when the scoring is so low. If you read the write up , multiple games were won in overtime, on penalties etc. Personally, I like sports with more scoring, but most of the world’s population disagrees with me. I’m glad everybody can chose what they enjoy for themselves.

I’m still waiting for Ohio’s first team NCAA championship in any sport, or did I miss something?

It's a shame that we don't have a Men's Soccer team. It's the type of sport that we could actually compete in nationally. There are enough high end teams in our region that we wouldn't have to have a huge travel budget.

This is a fairly recent trend in Men's soccer and a path a lot of schools took to accelerate their journey to relevance.

Pitt's similar. Not historically a power, but went into the tournament ranked #1, and had 17 foreign students on the roster. UNH became a regular top 10 team recently, always has a dozen or so foreign players.

But the more traditional powers (Indiana, Stanford, Duke) still tend to recruit largely from traditional US soccer hubs. But even teams like Clemson are starting to build international pipelines.

When I played high school soccer, you still saw D1 coaching staffs at high school games recruiting. My understanding is that's basically not a thing anymore; all recruiting happens at the club level now, and international players are growing substantially.

That's all likely a very good thing for the trajectory of US professional soccer. But I suspect college soccer's not gonna be a source of pro talent for much longer.

Not sure why the Power(s) That Be haven't moved this to the General Discussion section. In no way is this germane to Bobcat football.

Plus, it's only a matter of time until the NCAA finds Marshall gave these players no-show jobs... (!)

You are crazy! You are not competing nationally at the DI level with "local" talent!!! Marshall has one starter from the U.S.,.

You are mistaken! Where does he say anything about "local" talent? - his point was we would not have a high travel budget because there are a number of high-end competitors in the region that we could play without spending significant money on travel. Now are there other costs with respect to the program such as recruiting? Yes, but that is not what his post, nor your response was about.

"there are enough high end teams in the region". For what recuriting? Playing? If you have not noticed, outside of Men's football and Basketball, we do not fully fund any men's sports. Those "High end" programs would rake us over the coals. And the travel budget would be huge for recuriting if you were going to be any good at all.

Billy - it's OK - you misread his post. no reason to throw up smoke or deflection shields. Just say, "sorry, I thought your were implying we had local HS talent to compete - my bad" - but to address your response:

"there are enough high end teams in the region". For what recruiting? Playing?"

Again, the post was clearly discussing playing - and specifically that there are quality teams in the region (10 of the top 25 teams are easily reached by bus) and that would keep travel costs in check . So playing - not recruiting which (recruiting) is how you read it ("You are crazy! You are not competing nationally at the DI level with "local" talent!!!) - ahhh yea, we all know that.

"If you have not noticed, outside of Men's football and Basketball, we do not fully fund any men's sports." He in not suggesting undertaking such an effort, only presents that it is a sport that has a regional base so that we could address somewhat affordably from a travel standpoint - had we established a program "It's a shame that we don't have a Men's Soccer team."

Absolutely we'd get our clock cleaned if we simply tried to enter the fray - not suggested by anyone. And certainly would not try to do it with "local" talent - never ever being suggested by anyone - because....that would be "Crazy"

so yea Ice - too bad its not a sport OU ever fully pursued since there are a number of quality teams in the region that we could play against.

But to Billy's point - can't start now - horse has left the barn. An no, local talent would never suffice - nor was such an approach ever suggested. Local talent simply not strong enough, nor deep enough to carry OU in any sport - and certainly not one dominated by foreign talent.

Men's D1 soccer was never embraced by O.U.

When I played in the mid 70's, we had 1 scholarship.

One season we had volunteer coach (Dr.Spera).

Starters got shoes.
The rest of us were on our own.
1 uniform for home and away games.

Still played our hearts out.
I got to play with 2 of O.U.'s best: Eric Winders and Sherman Lyle.

Played our home games on the baseball field next to Grosvner Center.

Coach Grassie at UC made 1 Sweet 16, 1 Elite 8, 2 Final 4 and 2 Title games but lost the title game 1-0 both times. He was also on the Michigan staff in 2010 in the College Cup when Akron won their National Title.

Just like Marshall, Akron won the national title with a lot of foreign players as well, but they did have a number of key contributors from Northeastern Ohio. As mentioned above, most (all) of the recruiting is done at the club level rather than the high school level. Ohio is actually a power in high school soccer with multiple national championships in the last decade. While high school soccer has rapidly declined in other states a lot of talented club players will still play for their high school teams in Ohio.

I’d love to see us fire the soccer program back up, but adding men’s sports doesn’t seem to be the trend...

The only way to attempt to build, even a competitive soccer program from scratch, would be to hire a coach with established ties,to both high school and club programs.

You also need to understand that it will take at least a few seasons before you can expect a "new" soccer team to even be able to "hold its own" in D1 competition.

Not really, I still stand by my statement that those good regional teams would blast us, because we would NOT fund soccer, same way we are not funding any men's sport other than football and basketball. Talk to some of these coaches and see what they "don't have", we would never compete against these schools.

I’d hire some random foreigner from some obscure country and go all-in on poaching talent from that country’s pipeline.

I saw a team of refugees from Syria last year that could’ve wrecked some local club powerhouses

So will we start our soccer program before or after we expand Peden Stadium? Maybe soccer will help us with the need for stadium expansion?

Which is not the point you emphatically made in your initial misguided retort about "local" talent.

But rather self created points (funding and lagging behind in structure) that were not suggested by Ice (nor me) - So certainly standby and run to there and continue to runaway from the original post of departure.

Bottomline...

"Hey, sorry I misread about "local" talent - while I appreciate there are a lot of relatively "local" schools we could "play" against the reality is their funding and structural head start would negate any inroads we could competitively make at this time - especially since there is little to no chance money could be found for such an effort (I know you didn't actually suggest we find the money). Athletics (as everyone including you know) is pretty much tapped out financially."

All I read from you post is if we had soccer we could be relevant. I'll disagree.
