Not sure what it's called, but the signature move of the 110 is the "circle and kick" they do when marching. Browns fans used to go nuts over it when the band exited old Municipal Stadium following halftime shows in the 1970s and 80s.

I've noticed that with each new year the elevation of the "kick" is, uh, lessening. There were some marchers last night whose kicks were about 6-8 inches off the ground. When even try? It was like watching Bobcatsquared play basketball.

Man, the (important) traditions are dying left and right around here.

It's a sin and a shame what the 110 is trending toward. If I wanted to watch some musician just toot on a flute, I'd fly to NY and catch the Philharmonic (Jaap van Zweden and I go way back). I come to see the 110 because they know how to bring music to life...or at least they used to.

DO you think the probation for "hazing" might have taken some of the spirit out of the band? Might this account for some of the lack of energy you're noticing in this particular maneuver?

I wouldn't think so.

In reality, it has had and continues to leave a very bad taste in not only current members mouths but also alumns. On one hand you roll out your pride and joy when it's convenient and beneficial to you and then turn around and treat them like crap. Talk about taking a group for granted.

The way of the university. If you are not a big money generator, you are only brought out for the horse and pony show when needed. There are a lot of quality groups in that category.

As a 110 member from 2009-2013 (Tuba) including being marching section leader in 2012, I feel like I have some credibility to this discussion.

The parade dance you're talking about is "Funk", my personal favorite and probably one of the more visually impressive ones the 110 does.

To provide some context as to why it may be "lessening" as you put it this year, about half of the current members of the 110 have literally never worn the uniform before due to COVID last year, the majority of marching section leaders (the ones in charge of teaching new members the dances) have never taught new members before, and they also have to teach twice as many new members due to reasons mentioned above.

Executing the high kick properly takes practice, you simply won't nail it consistently your first few parades. Getting your footwork to turn around, prep for the jump kick, and execute on the correct count is not as easy as it looks. It personally took me about half of my freshman season to really nail it confidently and not be out of step or time on the landing.

Conditioning is probably also a factor. My freshman year I was sore in places I have never felt before because of the high step and some of those parade dances. Again about half of the members never marched before, so they're all going through this right now. Practicing in shorts and t shirts is one thing, doing it in those wool uniforms during those first couple of weeks when its still warm out is a whole nother thing. Movement is restricted, sometimes you have to make adjustments to your uniform or swap out parts of it during the year to find one that fits comfortably and give you freedom of movement required.

Dr. Suk has been the director since '96, and Josh Boyer who marched in the early-mid 2000s (and if i recall correctly, was Field Commander one of those years) has been the assistant director for the past 6 years. They don't like the 110 looking sloppy. Much like what this year's football program is shaping up to be, this will be a rebuilding year to get everyone up to speed and clean up their execution in general.

By the time MAC play rolls around, I would imagine the 110 will clean up their weaknesses. You just got to be patient this year with all things considered.

As a late ‘80’s 110 member, I think there has been change over the years from the “controlled violence “ marching style of 70’s and 80’s to today’s 110 that, I believe, makes musicianship a much higher priority. Honestly, I don’t know that I would make today’s 110 because they really have some amazing musicians. But I can leave the debate of which era was “more exciting “ to others.

As a parent of a current member, I will reiterate Kyle’s comments above. This is the rebuilding year I tried to warn BA about last year when the 110 wasn’t allowed to practice. The 110 was shutdown last year. Only senior staff were allowed to practice, while everyone else watched on webcam. Now, almost all of those seniors from last year are gone. The freshmen and sophomores “suited up” for their very first show last Saturday. Even some Juniors were performing their first shows because they many were alternates their freshmen year. Freshmen are always the largest class (followed by sophomores) because upperclassmen do drop out as they commit more time to their majors. It wouldn’t surprise me if 60-70% of the 110 members were performing their very first show last weekend.

Additionally, not only are they looking over their shoulders for JHJ, but they also have Gillian Ice (OU Healy Director) over the other shoulder. They have been threatened for shutdown if they have even one positive case of covid. Students face discipline from student affairs if they go to practice or performances feeling ill. As a result, they have had quite a bit of disruption in their practices. My junior daughter was ill on Monday. They sent her home and wouldn’t let her on practice field until she was cleared of covid. She couldn’t get a test Monday due to university being shutdown for Labor Day. She got the test on Tuesday, but results weren’t back until Thursday. Even though she was negative, she wasn’t allowed at 3 of the 5 practices this week and was bumped from the halftime show. I heard quite a few other members were missing this week with similar stories.

On a positive note, even though the Justin Bieber/BTS show(Syracuse game) and Motown Show (Duquesne) were not in my music wheelhouse, the BTS dance chart from Syracuse game did go semi-viral with over 440,000 views worldwide. So the 110 continues to try and generate positive recognition for the university.

Just an update, since so many members are missing practices for covid protocols, they are reducing the halftime marching block from 220 to 190. They don’t have enough alternates to fill all the vacated spots from missing members, so 30 halftime block members will now become alternates. Alternates can challenge after every home game to take a spot from another performing member.

This doesn’t impact pregame block because pregame block only has 165 marching spots.

I've posted before that both my wife and niece are nurses.

My niece still treats covid patients exclusively, in a covid ward at one of NJ's "regional receiving " hospitals for covid patients.

The covid protocols O.U. is following, including for vaccinated students, are far more strict then either of their hospitals use for their staff.

Have no idea why.

I would think health care facilities would have the optimum policies for
keeping patients and the public safe.

Both of which by the way haven't had any issues dealing with covid patients, going back to last year.

To clarify the numbers.

The 110 is reducing the halftime block from 208 to 192 members. 16 additional alternates moving forward.

Some of the covid policies at hospitals are being watered down by unions and lawsuits. I'm surprised that there haven't been lawsuits over colleges' policies but I guess if someone doesn't like a school's policies they can always go somewhere else.

My wife's is hospitals isn't unionized.
My niece's nurse's union has supported their covid protocols since day 1.
Neither hospital has had any lawsuits filed against them.

NJ has made vaccination of health care workers mandatory, but both places were at over 95% compliance before that.

As I posted, neither hospital has had any issues dealing with covid patients going back to last year.

So it seems their "watered down" policies are as effective as the policies put in place by O.U.

Its also kind of odd that the person responsible for how O.U. is dealing with covid isn't an MD or DO,or even has a clinical background in virology or epidemiology .

Just following what the State was doing until recently. After Dr. Amy Acton stepped down, the Ohio Department of Health was headed by a PR person whose medical background consisted of dealing with some health issues at the Bureau of Workers Comp. Maybe she stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. She recently went back to BWC and they promoted the #2 guy -- an actual doctor -- to head the Department.
