Most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.

Great for my 9 year olds to open that conversation.

Unless there is a documented threat against the long awaited Ohio/Howard tilt, someone should be ashamed of themselves for approving that show of force. Like a normal hand gun among the 97 police officers onsite wasnt’t good enough to hold off a drunk college student or rowdy alum.....

Not to mention, lets say a Vegas-like incident did break out...does the APD really think one lowly cop with an AK-47 is going to snuff it out?

Pathetic. If someone in Athletics approved this, they too should be ashamed.

I dont need to go back to Fallujah, I mean Peden... this year.

And before all you gun nuts start running your mouths, i have absolutely no problem stationing police with machine guns in inconspicuous places....but to station just a lowly Buckingham Palace guard to get off 900 quick rounds at the front gate....just unnecessary.

But LOVE, it will deter someone blah blah blah. Prefer the uneducated shut down the keyboard on this one.

I didnt see this at the other 5 gates, so the logic escapes me.

I am not a "gun nut" but I find your post to be offensive because you bullied and insulted people with this post. Had you put the "i didn't see this at the other five gates, so the logic escapes me," your first post would have been sufficient. I am a firm believer in the second amendment, but I would have gladly agreed with this appearing to be overkill. seems like overkill, but you politicized this whole thing with such inflammatory rhetoric.

why couldn't you have at least waited for someone to say it was for a deterrence before getting on your high horse.

this is why it is difficult to have civil discuss anymore. i agree with you, but you really ticked me off with your rhetoric. i am neither uneducated nor a gun nut.

I am 100% pro second amendment, and 100% in agreement with Love. That is absolutely unnecessary and a heck of a way to welcome fans to the game. Totally overkill and is scary to kids - and many adults too.

I would rather see (actually not see, just have one there) an officer with a sniper rifle on a high point. Much better to scan a larger area and keeps whoever they (the police) think might strike guessing. I first started seeing machine pistol officers in Germany and Great Britain in the 70's and then saw them in New York subway stations though my memory is hazy on the year. In a closed space like the inside of a station, I can see using the officers this way, but in a open crowd?

I was not looking for civil discourse or any kind of consensus or agreement. I was stating right (my viewpoint) and wrong (the viewpoint of anyone who disagrees with me*).

*i maintain this is all contingent on no known threat hanging over the game. However if ISIS or Al Qaeda did target Ohio v Howard - i feel confident one lone APD gunman wasnt going to save us all. Therefore, shame on APD and Athletics for that farce.

Its amazing the difference between places like Athens, and where I live in Northern New Jersey.

We've had police in tactical gear, including semi-automatic weapons and K-9'S, at places like Giants Stadium since before 9/11.

Sine 9/11 they are at pretty much every public event.
In NYC they're all over, including in Time Square.

And forget the security for things like the Israel or Saint Patrick's Day Parades or, as the 110 can tell you, the Thanksgiving Day Parade and of course New Years Eve.

In fact, when police set up DUI or "click it or ticket" check points, they tend to be in tactical gear.
Just no helmets or semi-automatic M16's.

We're so used to them you don't even notice them, unless you're standing right next to them.

Around here every police vehicle has either a shotgun,M16 or both.

So the lesson could be, the more often they show force, the more used to it the citizens become?

I remember the big security breach my freshman years was the students who climbed the large hill on the other side of the freeway to change the rolls of paper that read “Ribs at Ritz” to “T I T S at Ritz”. The sight of the overweight Athens Police officers struggling to climb up the hill was priceless.

I am fine with all of the clearbag policy stuff and lots of police officers, but I understand the automatic weapon at the gate might be a bit much. The real threat at large stadiums in the future will be drones.

Been present at every game, including basketball, just not always visible. And that decision is above OHIO Athletics pay grade.

Rather overdo it than be unprepared with a mass crowd. Better get your kids used to it, sorry to say.

as was stated , these assault weapon equipped officers have been at every game since they changed the traffic pattern on south green drive. I have always thought it might be a little much.

I've seen them at basketball games and I'm sure they are at football games regularly also, but for some reason this one seemed to stand out more than the others. Many people in my party (including my children) mentioned it.

I've always thought OU overkills when it comes to stuff like this, but if there happened to be an incident, I'm sure we would appreciate it being there.

Do you believe “civil discuss” used to be easy? We have it anyway. If you are neither “uneducated” on the issue, or a “gun nut”, then why are you insulted by Bobcat Loves statement? That’s pretty amusing. Thank you!

love inflamed things by using the terms gun nut and uneducated. both completely unnecessary unless his intent was to bully and insult. i was stating that his point could have easily stood on its own. if i called him a blathering idiot or a left wing wacko it hurts my argument. i don't even know who he is. i have no idea is he is left leaning, right leaning or apolitical.

i was stating that he basically said (and he confirmed) that in his opinion he was right and anyone who disagrees with him is a nut and/or uneducated. not very civil.

i also said i did not necessarily disagree that a semi-automatic weapon at the front gate seemed like overkill.

i as simply stating that he could have made his point without trying to intimidate other viewpoints.

i believe we could have more fruitful discussions in this country if we stopped trying to bully and insult those we disagree with. i think trying to find common ground makes more sense than calling someone a nut job or uneducated.

i feel like actual conversations would be far better than posting somewhat anonymous pogroms on the internet.

I attended a National Night Out event last month.

They had a number of exhibits, including a local police Rapid Response Team.

I've seen a couple of comments here about whether or not there was a "threat" at the Howard game.

One of the things the police talked about was the threat from a "lone wolf".

One person can, without warning, cause a lot of harm, very quickly.
All you need is a gun, knife, truck, car, pretty much anything can be a weapon.

By the time police respond from "off site",the damage may already be done.

We were told that seeing a heavily armed officer or K-9 at an event can make someone reconsider.

We were also told that, because in most cases the lone wolf or wolves' intent is to kill as many people as quickly as possible, police have been forced to change their tactics in "active shooter" situations.
They no longer secure a perimeter.
Now, when the first officer arrives, they are expected to go in.
That is one reason the state is pushing for all officers to have "heavy" weapons in their vehicles.
Although, what was interesting,in "tight" areas, like building hallways, police prefer a handgun over anything else.

At the Bahamas Bowl, their national guard or whatever they're called was present throughout the stadium. They were all armed with AK's or some kind of machine gun.

When attending NFL games at Browns Stadium, I regularly see law enforcement armed with Sniper Rifles climbing the stadium steps to enter the press box. From my understanding, they access a ladder/stairs that take them to the roof/lights where they position themselves for the game.

...

Most D-1 college football and college basketball games have tens of thousands of people in one place, not just at Ohio. If placing law enforcement of some kind in the stadium heavily armed acts as a deterrent, successful or not, I'm OK with it.

I don't think machine guns in every public location "solves" the problem, but I'm also not sure I see the downside of it. Sadly, explaining to a 9-year-old the dangers of society is the reality of the world we live in.

I've seen crazier things happen.

What’s the point of a semi-auto AK? No way those were semi.

This post is full of so much stupid it really makes you want to laugh, ... or cry.

Really. An AK47? We’re the OUPD also driving around flashing it from the back of a shoddy S-10 ready to commit holy war?

The OUPD, through a grant with the US Department of Homeland Security, have trained officers who act as the final line of defense between a terrorist situation and the lives of those who attend tevents they are responsible to protect. Yes, some of the officers carry high caliber rifles.

Do you not take your children places. I hope you don’t plan on taking them to: any concert, any pro sporting event, large fair or festival, any NCAA sporting event, the Boston Marathon, Times Square for NYE or any airport in this country..

What a derogatory post that insults so many people. Insulting to the police who are simply trained and doing their job. Insulting to anyone who supports the 2nd Amendment, regardless of their stance of the militarization of local police and the list goes on.

They stand at that entrance every single game. Just noticed it?

I hope you don’t come back to a game. If something so idiotic that is not controlled at the local level is what stops you from coming: see ya.

Perhaps this would have been a good time to speak with your child about 9/11 or how little kids their age in England were killed while going to an Ariana Grande concert. It’s not like these precautions don’t stem from reality.

I am actually in agreement that it is over the top but I can at least see perspective of why it’s there and. Could ask reasonable questions without posting the most smug post to ever bless this forum.
