It's as irrelevant now as it was when we were on it.

I never understood why some people seemed so ashamed to be on it. There are some mediocre universities there, but there are always a number of top public and private universities on it every year. Looking at the list this year, I see Wisconsin, UC-Santa Barbara and Illinois. I've always thought that Miami consistently making the "diversity not welcome" and "little class/race interaction lists was a much bigger black eye.

We went from #1 to #3 and the administration over-reacted.

Reminds me of Nebraska Football. One minute your mad about going 9-4 the next minute you haven't been ranked in 3 straight years.

Sad.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I went to school during the transition from quarters to semesters. There was a huge difference from my fresh year to my senior year. Long live spring quarter, a tradition I was lucky enough to experience. Fests get shut down at like 2pm now. Shame.

Same.

We switched over to semesters for my senior year, so I at least got three full years of the quarters experience.

I (hazily) remember Mill Fest and High Fest going into the night my freshman and sophomore years before cops started shutting them down. By my last year in grad school, Palmer street was cleared out by 3 or 4.

Excuse my ignorance, as I was fully a quarters student, but why did the change have such an impact on the parties and fests?

Because the year is over on or about April 28th as opposed to June 2nd. Fests in March and April are a whole lot different than fest in May and June weather wise.

Cutting down on Fests is probably why they switched to semesters. :-)

My experience exactly. The famous Palmer riot where the couch got torched in the street probably had something to do with the police cracking down in the following years but the weather during the semester system is just plain awful. Granted the fests get a good turnout still, but it takes some serious dedication to stand outside in the freezing cold and drink all day and into the night. Keeps it relatively tame.

Princeton was obviously not in town to review during the home Miami basketball game - alumni efforts would have put us back on the list. :)

Kids these days...

In all seriousness though it is a bummer the newer students won't get experience the glory that was spring quarter. My cousin is a freshmen this year and her OU experience will be absent the long winter break and the wonderful springs. No bueno

Here is why you should not like the designation of "Party School". I used to be a recruiter for one of the largest employers in Central Ohio. When we would discuss candidates to bring to hiring managers, I would sometimes hear, "He/She went to OU, that's just a party school" and they would not be sent to the hiring manager. You can say , well it's their loss, but that doesn't put food on the table of the Ohio Grad.

Now OU no longer has a Human Resource Management Major. So there will be less Bobcats in HR to defend our University.

Do you think she was saying the same thing about Wisconsin or Illinois grads?

Sorry this reply took so long. The answer is no, they didn't include those schools. The company is located in Columbus where only Ohio is thought of as "the Party School"

Just curious - what Central Ohio employer did you used to work for where this apparently holds weight? (feel free to PM if you are uncomfortable)

I'm not saying they don't have a lot of Bobcats, they do, but it was more of a recruiting issue where we would bring a candidate to the hiring manager and they would mention the party school issue. They may have hired that candidate because they were the best fit for the job.

I just can't understand why people don't understand that the Party school reputation lessens the value of our degree.

Actually, thinking about how a student survived the party school image of OU to graduate should show an HR rep how resilient they are, what a good multi-tasker they are and how adept they are at working well into the night.

The party school knock is an old time thing. With the school working hard to bring in a more diverse socio-economic student I think its helping to cut into the old party rep. No offense to the party school types on here but its kids from pop-tart suburban households which plan to go back to live with their parents after graduation that are doing the hard core partying.

Man, its like people in Ohio go out of their way to diss Ohio University. They are fearful (OSU people) and/or jealous (everone else) that they didn't work hard and play hard and succeed like so many Bobcats do.

Several years ago Harvard and now all Ivy League schools stopped awarding scholarships on the basis of academic performance. All of their scholarships are now on the basis of need, as they define it. I thought it was a big mistake then, and still think so. It might make sense for a very talented kid with high SAT scores, from a middle class background, to take a full-ride academic scholarship from a state school rather than be saddled with maybe a half-tuition scholarship at an Ivy League school. A kid from a very low socio-economic family with the same credentials would probably be wiser to go to the Ivy League school.

Beg to differ with you. As one who worked in the public schools of Ohio from 1984 till 2017, if i've heard it once I've heard it 100 times from high school juniors and seniors when asked if they were considering OU. A very common answer was "my mom and dad won't let me go there. It's a party school."

On the flip side, some of the best yearbook advisers that I worked with were OU grads.

Alan do you hear it randomly or is there a pattern to it? I think the parents that are gung ho about sending their kids to OU like to party themselves. The mass consumer party household where every last penny is spent on a material good. Beach week every summer and spending work bonuses on SUVs. Its the socially conservative families that are afraid of the big bad OU I'm guessing.
