Article in Forbes today from Richard Vedder. The title of this thread taken from the article made me chuckle.

I thought the article was very well written.

I also chuckled at the "Last Resort Bowl".

I like that the article mentioned lowering admission standards to maximize enrollment as a negative.

I was a bit surprised that he also took a less then positive view of O.U.'s
emphasizing political correctness,"regarding things like sustainability and diversity".

He also didn't pull any punches when it came to O.U.'s budget cuts.

This is one time I can't say I disagree with what he had to say.

I think what he is getting at here as much as anything are the countless programs that have been added that did not exist when he was in the classroom that in his opinion have nothing to do with the core mission of the institution.

That may very well be.

I also feel that, if what you said about his intent is accurate,he feels O.U should get away from placing so much importance on P/C things like sustainability and diversity and get back to their core mission.

Hard to think that Sustainability would be considered "p/c". I don't view it that way at all.

How many people were in that department when you were a student here Jeff?

Having taken one of Vedder’s classes, I am not surprised at all he bashed “pc” culture. I greatly enjoyed his lectures, partly because he has no regard for sugar-coating things with “pc-talk”

I've seen crazier things happen.

Exactly. People who view sustainability as p/c or political in any way have pretty much outlived their usefulness as human beings and can **** right the hell off and eat a bag of d**** in hell.

Conceptually, sustainability, for things like renewable energy, is admirable.

Thing is,O.U.is facing significant budget issues, which included a number of layoffs.

So the question is,in this environment, can O.U. afford the luxury of its current sustainability staff ?

Looking at the Administrative Staff listing, its hard to tell exactly what some of these people do.

Maybe they could explain,in plain English, exactly what their job is and why the position is cost effective.

Cost effectiveness seemed to be how O.U. determined certain staff reductions.

I'd also like to know if they've ever implemented anything that resulted in
cost savings because of sustainability.
