It must be stated that many of us are very disappointed as to our current W-L record. The fact that the program was picked to win the conference only makes us more concerned.
I don't mean to come across as an alarmist, however, the record is what it is. It's a fact that is not arguable.
I want to believe that we will see improvement and quickly.
Our D is awful, a fact, and must improve for us to return to a winning program.

I'm remaining positive because we have the talent.

It must be stated that you are in fact an alarmist.

"many of us" You must have a turd in your pocket, because many of us predicted the team to in-fact be 1-3 or 2-2 at this point in the season.

The fact you, and only you, are taking about "the state of the program" after 4 games (3 on the road) is so hilarious I'm still not sure it's not shtick.

Which of the 3 non-conference away games did you think they should win?

Just the one...? The one game vs Illinois State...? So if they were 2-2 you'd be okay, at 1-3... we need to discuss the state of the program.

You think the sky is falling because they didn't beat Memphis on the road? We need look deep within ourselves to 'return to a winning program' because they struggled early on the road vs a team that won 30+ games last season?

Ohio doens't look like a good basketball team at the moment. Watched BG vs MSU, and while the Spartans pulled it out, the game was very competitive up until the last six minutes or so. I bet if we played BG this week they'd eat our lunch. I still have hope we'll get our act together before the conference season, but to claim everything is "just what we expected" at this point doesn't seem accurate to me.

So again I ask, which of the games we were projected to lose did you think we would win?

It's not necessarily that we lost but how we lost. Our defense is not good. Our offense is very inconsistent. We are athletic, but maybe not "basketball athletic." James looks like he could play football with pads and open up huge holes for the Bobcat football team. Some of our guys look more like acrobats playing basketball than basketball players with acrobatic moves. OK, I'm in funk. I hope that I can come back in February and eat all of these words. But, I'd be lying if I said I was not worried.

The hope for this team:

1) The defense recovers to a point of being basically average. Especially on the perimeter where nobody projected us to be awful.

2) The MAC is as bad as it projects to be.

At least 50% of the reaction to our performance here is about a collective failure on this board to adjust for just how bad the MAC has become. Best team in the MAC used to mean top 40ish team nationally. It doesn't anymore. The best team in the MAC may just mean we lose to above average Sun Belt & Missouri Valley teams, and get destroyed by Memphis and the like.

But I don't think we're at a "State of the Program" point in the year yet. We all let ourselves get carried away, sure. But that's as much on us as it is on Boals.

Put it this way: our best player is AJ Clayton. Take a look back at our best teams over the past 20 years. I like AJC plenty, but is he in the same tier as Preston, Cooper, or Armon Basset? Is he better than Leon Williams or Jeremy Fears? Is he even as good as the #2 guy on any of those teams?

Pretty early for a State of the Program post. Memphis game literally means nothing and the same can basically be said for the rest of the games we've played. Now if we start conference play out 1-3 then this post may be warranted. I'm not happy with the Illinois State loss as I believe we are the better team, but they beat us at their place and we don't know what their record will be when its all said and done.

We get so caught up in what this team's "identity" should be. Basketball isn't a complicated game and often times you'll see similarities in the stat sheet for any given loss.

Rebound + win the turnover battle + make FTs and more times than not, we will win those games regardless of opponent.

The great equalizer is the 3 ball and clearly we have not defended the 3 pt line well enough in these first 4 games. I think we will get that part of the defense figured out and still feel really good about the trajectory of this season.

AJC isn't in the same tier as those program greats but I would be comfortable putting him in the tier 2 category. He is as talented as any we've had come through the program but its the consistency that has held him back. When he's on he's as good as any of those tier 1 Bobcats but he just hasn't been able to take it to the level where you can guarantee an all MAC performance on a nightly basis.

Are we seriously having this discussion, AGAIN?

Well would you look at that. The same exact topic headline posted by the same person within less than a calendar year.

it's obvious this team needs to work on defending the three shot. this program has always had trouble with this. boals need to work on this issue hard. we need to be recruiting players who have more size ,strength , speed and agility. until that gets squared away we'll continue to get buried by three shots and hammered on the glass. even so we should not have lost so badly against memphis. they aren't even one of the top teams in the country. i could see us losing like that against a team like duke or alabama but not memphis. and jmu and illinois state should not have been able dominate us as they did. we should have been able to win jmu and illinois state and at least be within 12 of memphis.

I am not surprised too much at all by the 1-3 record. That doesn't mean that I think we look close to as good as I thought we would be. Some things, mostly perimeter defense, are glaring concerns.

Boalsj@ohio.edu maybe you could share a couple defensive drills that will help the team on defense. Maybe text him and tell him to tell the guys to rebound. It should help him understand what he should be doing.

It is Bobcat71. We just have some posters on this board who have some obviously deep-seated Mommy and Daddy issues, who also have disturbing inadequacies that are on full display every single time their fingers touch the keyboard. It doesn't take much to be nice and respectful to people and to stick to the subject at hand rather than launching ad hominem attacks against others. They would prefer to launch personal attacks against you rather than insulting their own mothers, because, one, they don't appear to have anything intelligent or original to say, and, secondly, they appear to be living in the basement of their mothers and being supported by them. RESPECT is the law of the streets. Practice it, please.

Addressing the topic at hand though, I think that even if the Bobcats went undefeated throughout the entire season, they would still have to win the MAC tournament or they would get screwed out of an entry into the NCAA tournament, itself. That's why I think Boals is trying different rotations and such in order to prepare the team for success in the MAC and subsequent tournament play, and that winning these out of conference games is not as important as exploring what he has available to him in certain situations. Yeah, it is always fun to knock off a power program here and there, and who can forget that Gary Trent led team that won the Pre-Season NIT Tournament, but I think one really has to see these non-conference games as being preseason games where the coach works on getting people to gell and play well with one another. With all of that in mind, I think that it is likely premature to assess the State of the Program, but I feel your pain.

I've never seen a forum without an "ignore" function by whatever name.

It's time to lobby for this to be available...since it probably exists but is just disabled as an option. I would consider it an honor to be put on "ignore" by at least one troll/stalker that shall go unnamed at the moment.

Feelings? It's about respect, honor, and dignity. There is too much Cyber Bullying on this site at times. People are better than that. Ohio University Graduates are better than that. There are people with different levels of experience and insight on this site. Don't like what they say, either move on or argue the facts. Don't call them names or get personal. Seriously? You know, those of use who grew up in Athens and are Ohio University Graduates ourselves are Ambassadors for this Insitution and this Community, like it or not. Let's show some class. Who knows, we may impress a parent or young athlete during this time of NIL recruitment, who decide to explore BobcatAttack.Com to get a feel for what the fans here are like. Since we don't have the deep pockets like the Big Boys and Girls do; perhaps, we can win people over with simple kindness and respect. Ohio Bobcat fans have always been known for their intelligence, sense of humor, kindness and respectfulness to others, but you wouldn't know it at times when reading some of the posts here. We can have a solid discourse and disagree on things without it becoming personal.

It’s actually not an option this platform, per Ryan and Ted who put much of their own time and money into this site and have for almost 30 years.

Nobody is going to disagree that cyber bullying is bad. But it's certainly not happening in this thread.

Bottom line is that in this thread, the facts were argued, and when people disagreed with the OP he. . caught feelings and tried to act like people disagreeing with him was somehow an affront to open conversation. That is very precisely about feelings. Dude didn't even make an attempt at a single counterpoint. He just jumped immediately to "I thought this board was for open dialogue" -- which is funny, because he actually just seems to want people to agree with him.

And in the other thread, people -- including myself -- 1) disagreed with the basic premise of his post (that the team's not athletic enough) and 2) gave him s*hot for trying to very passive aggressively re-hash a 6 year old argument he's been carrying around this whole time. And he can't even cite what he's talking about about.

So, yeah, it's about feelings. Nothing rose to the point of cyber bullying, and nobody's dignity was called into question.
