Interesting stuff here. Speaking only for myself, this hinders my interest in college hoops a bit. This is not what NIL was meant to be about in my opinion.

Agree. It sucks to see what has unfolded over the last five years to this great game.

As coaches salaries went from dean level and just under the president, to 5-10M per year, the players wanted theirs.

I don't disagree. It's all become ridiculous, but it started there to some degree. Players deserve to be compensated, yes. They absolutely, for years deserved the ability to market their own name image and likeness freely. But college basketball players now being paid a million dollars to ride the pine? For me, that's a "C'mon man" moment. The folks to blame are the folks in the NCAA offices and anyone who fought against this from the start instead of crafting a sensible way to handle all of it. Now, it has become another example of what American greed looks like and how it can wreck things for many while a few get richer. I'll be thrilled to be proven wrong this next year, but I'll betcha we've see the last of a mid-major making it even to the Sweet 16. To me, that ruins the tournament, and the NCAA's golden goose, and they've only themselves to blame.

“ Here's what $400,000 will get you for one season in 2025: a mid-major guy who averaged fewer than 10 points on a non-NCAA Tournament team. This isn't hypothetical; that very thing has already happened multiple times in recent weeks.”

“ A role player on a mid-major that failed to make the NCAA Tournament will be paid at least $1 million next season. That's where we're at in college hoops. It's just one amazing story out of hundreds being swapped across the sport these days.”

“ A competing school swiftly came over the top and signed him for $1 million. (Another coach I checked in with to verify the story claimed the number is in fact $1.2 million.) The player was so bowled over by the offer, he signed a contract even before eventually calling and telling the other school what he'd done.”

These all jumped out at me. We’re year 4 into this and it sounds like schools aren’t doing themselves a favor by just throwing out whatever numbers instead of using past contract data for a new baseline agreement. Essentially, what professional leagues do while also keeping in mind contracts do bump over time.

Hopefully, this is what GM’s being brought in will be assessing moving forward to help place some guardrails on this and create more justified agreements.

I mean, what 18-25 year old who thought he was getting $500K wouldn’t dip if someone came out of the woods with $1.2 million for no real justified reason? Seem like careless spending to me.

Just like the pros, production, position, and age/year’s of eligibility should dictate contract value but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. This is where I think these contracts need to be public like professional ones.

When does the NBA take over running this crap show from the incompetent NCAA?

Something needs to be done soon. Everyone on here is pretty much a die-hard Ohio and Mid-Major hoops fan. It's going to destroy interest moving forward if this doesn't get fixed or better regulation. These players transferring 3-4-5 times in a college career is insanity.

It's not gonna be the NBA, it's gonna be the conferences themselves.

Schools just need to put buy-out clauses in athletic scholarships like they do coaches contracts. You can't legally stop someone from transferring as many times as they want - but you can for sure make them pay back room&board/meals/tuition/books/NIL $/etc as terms of the contract if they don't fulfill the agreement. Let the courts challenge that. Nobody is FORCING them to sign the contract for an athletic scholarship.

If you graduate from the school you've fulfilled the terms. Otherwise, play 4+ years, pay back nothing. Play 3 years pay back 50%. Play 2 years pay back 75%. Play 1 (or less) years pay back 100%. Something like that.

Say a mid-major player. What's out of state room-board, tuition and meals at OU these days? Looks like about $38k/year. Books? Say $500 a semester - $1k/year. Say they get $100k in NIL/athletics pay. That's roughly $140k/year.

Transfer after 1 year - you owe the university/bball team $140k.
Transfer after 2 years - you owe 75% of $280k = $210k.
Transfer after 3 years - you owe 50% of $420k = $210k.

If Johnny McMoneyBags wants to just buy out that payment as part of the deal to get them to transfer like coaoches do now, then so be it. At least we get repaid for our investment that we can use on the next guy.

What do you think NIL was going to be about? It was/is about allowing players to benefit financially off of their talents, image and monetize their popularity. Not sure why people only thought it would be pocket change, because it's never been pocket change with the big boosters who want their programs to win. It's just now legal.
