That Myrtle Beach tournament was an absolute embarrassment. All 5 teams that finished ahead of Ohio are God awful programs. Not to mention the beat downs to JMU, ISU, and Memphis, that were all winnable games for a halfway decent team. I’m done with the Boals experiment. DONE!!!

Agreed. Let’s tear down the Convo too. Just play games in Ping.

And I thought it was weird when Alan Swank, 695, and other wannabes harped on the O Zone during the Sweet 16 season....

Since 2020, OU is 46-25 in MAC play. 1-1 in the NCAA Tournament.

John Groce is 52-22. 0-2 in the NCAA Tournament.

Kowalcyzk wins all the time, but is frequently bounced in the first round of the NIT.

We're not even entertaining this because of a few losses in Myrtle Beach in November.

Call me in March if this campaign continues this way. Until then I'm not worried.

That said, if there's one thing that needs priority emphasis in recruiting down the road is definitely some form of a big man. Trying to win Golden State style only works for so long, but when you aren't shooting like the Warriors, you tend to open yourself to tip drills on the glass and look like the Pistons.....

Donate money to the NIL rather than a Boals contract buyout. You'll be far better off. I assume that you already are if you have such high demands on a coach.

+1

Already there with ya and make contributions. In this day and age, NIL funds are going to be wonky. Will be very entertained to see where it goes and believe we can do it right if we're efficient. That said, gotta let the idiots blow their wads on bench warming bigs and bleed em dry once they realize that NIL is a long-game, not just a quick one off.

I still believe our guards will mesh and figure it out. It's just knowing that rebounding will be an Achilles heel all year.

don,t think we should get rid of jeff at this time. this is team is looking more and more like the 1998 team though. they have lost four games that they should've won. it is,nt that boals should be canned. it's that he needs to start recruiting bigger stronger players who can rebound better. Boals is coaching the same way larry hunter was. the difference is larry recruited players who could provide a stronger interior force. vic searls and AJ clayton are decent players but they most certainly are not of the same caliber as gary trent, curtis simmons, or patrick flomo. that is the type of player that Boals needs to recruit to address the rebound problems. and we need to work on perimeter and 3 shot D. that has always been a problem. it's a problem that showed up in game against xavier the year they won pre season Nit. xavier exploited that fully and that's what teams are doing now against us. certainly time for a change. this is 2024 not 1998 so lets gets this team playing accordingly

Larry Hunter's downfall was his inability to sign a decent point guard. Rest of the team was solid.

Curse Corey Reed's damn knee. Even though he was never a great outside shooter, he was quick as lightning and could get to the hoop. Athletic enough to finish in paint. Great defender. And he was a true pass first PG unlike Geno.

Alas it wasn't meant to be.

Exactly, he was an u.nderrated player that did all the little things. When he went down it was over for the season.

If folks want to rate Groce ahead of Boals, that’s fine. But I still think that makes Boals the second-best coach we’ve had in the last half-century.

Boals’s strength is getting each team playing its best down the stretch, when it matters. Only the last Sears/Vander Plas team failed to do so. While I’m down about the early results this season, I believe the team will look far better in February/March.

In Boals I trust!

Nobody sane or serious thinks Boals should be fired. Far from it. He's doing what he can within the budgetary constraints he's provided.

I'm unhappy with the results so far this season, but believe they will improve.

I'm unhappy knowing while we are far from a really good D1 team that we're likely still a top MAC team bc our entire conference sucks. And this isn't changing anytime soon.

It is what it is.

The days of Gary Trent, Bonzi Wells, Ron Harper et al coming from the MAC are well behind us.

Pretty sure we have the highest or second highest bball budget in the league.

And we have, arguably, the best coach in the league.
Annually, we have one of the top rated recruiting classes.
We lead the league in attendance - and student attendance.
We normally finish in the top 1/3 of the league standings - and have one of the best historical conference tournament records of any school in the league.
We have the most NCAA tournament wins in the league in the last 25 years.

I'd say that budget is doing exactly what it's supposed to - with respect to the rest of the MAC. The Yankees don't win it every year, but their payroll let's them be contenders every year. We're always MAC contenders.

Of course it's piddly compared to even other mid-major conferences like A10, MVC, CUSA, American or even MtnWest or WCC which we used to be ranked above or right along with. Let alone some of the low majors that have now passed us up like ASun, Colonial, Big West, Sun Belt or SoCon.

We're doing better than the Yankees, given results vs budget.

Bingo SBH about the budget! And Boals is the second highest paid if not top paid coach in the MAC. Don't get me wrong, Boals is a solid coach, but for being the top or second highest coach in the league, I expect better results. I guess the conference tourney is all that matters! Win three games in March and that is the ultimate goal! Doesn't matter if the regular season ends up 3rd or 5th or 8th, just be fortunate to win a few games in the tourney and all is good!

Don't think Boals should be dismissed. But agree with SBH. Ohio's budget is one of the top in the conference and Boals is top 2 salary in the league. Evidently all that matters in basketball is the conference tournament. Doesn't matter if the team ends up 3rd, 5th or 8th in the regular season. Just win three games in March and all is good. You would think more should be expected?

i think ou needs to move to another conference. The AAC, CONFERENCE usa, maybe atlantic 10 and big east are good conferences. they all offer up more than one bid and this team has potential to deleop into a team that could compete well enough on a regular basis that they wouldn,t have to win the conference tourney to get an ncaa bid.
