BUFFALO, N.Y. – Ohio came out of its offensive funk and swept the season series with Buffalo by taking a 95-83 victory Saturday at Alumni Arena.
Javan Simmons had a career-high 24 points and 13 rebounds, and Aidan Hadaway added 19 points and nine rebounds as the Bobcats (12-11, 6-5 Mid-American Conference) had their way inside with 50 points in the paint.
JJ Kelly contributed 17 points, while Jackson Paveletzke had a double-double of 17 points and 11 assists.
After scoring just 57 and 65 points the last two games, Ohio shot 53.0%.
Daniel Freitag had a game-high 25 points to lead Buffalo (14-8, 4-6 MAC). Ryan Sabol scored 22 points, and Angelo Brizzi added 15 points.
The Bobcats led nearly the entire game, with the Bulls holding only a couple of small leads in the first half. Ohio went in front for good on a Simmons layup that made it 17-15 at the 11:01 mark. Simmons and Hadaway added buckets to increase the lead.
Later, a Simmons layup put the advantage into double digits for the first time at 33-22, and he had four points in a 7-0 run that made it 44-40. A pair of Kelly free throws pushed the lead to 46-31 at halftime.
Buffalo got as close as 58-52 on a Brizzi three-point play with 12:53 remaining. Jesse Burris and Kelly had baskets to push the lead back out to double digits. Then when the Bulls cut it to six again, Hadaway and Simmons scored points in the paint.
After a Kelly 3-poniter extended Ohio’s lead to 77-64, Buffalo cut it to seven, but Kelly answered with another 3. The Bulls had one more good chance to make it a game at the end when Sabol hit a 3, but he then missed on the front end of a one-and-one, and Hadaway put back his own miss to make it a nine-point game when it could have been cut to five.
Hadaway picked up his fourth foul with 17:43 remaining and returned with 10:47 to go when Buffalo cut it to six. He did not pick up another one the rest of the way.
Buffalo finished at 55.8% shooting for the game but had less chances by virtue of a 13-6 turnover disparity and a 13-6 difference in offensive rebounds.
Both of the Bobcats biggest offensive games in MAC play have been against the Bulls. They beat them 91-80 three weeks ago in Athens.
Western Michigan visits The Convo at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
