Bobcats put it together at home with rout of Colonials

Ohio shoots over 50% in just 2nd home game of season

ATHENS – It was home sweet home for Ohio, which put together its best performance of the season with an 84-68 runaway victory against Robert Morris on Saturday at The Convo.

With only one prior home game, the Bobcats (3-5) had some struggles but had a balanced offensive performance that overwhelmed the Colonials (6-3). AJ Clayton led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds.

Amarion Dickerson made a free throw on the game’s opening possession, but that was the only lead of the game for Robert Morris. Aidan Hadaway answered with a layup and then a 3-pointer to get Ohio off to a good start.

The Colonials tied the game at 9, but the Bobcats scored seven of the next eight points, going up 16-10 on an Elmore James 3-pointers. Later in the first half, Vic Searls scored five in a row to push the lead to double digits at 23-12.

Robert Morris battled back to get as close as 25-22, but Ohio closed the half strong and extended its lead to 42-30 at halftime.

The lead the rest of the way was never less than 12. Ohio went up 56-38 on a Hadaway three-point play with 14:14 left and then went over 20 at 66-44 on a Clayton 3-pointer with 10:32 to go. It never got closer than the final margin after that.

Searls had a big day with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Hadaway and Jackson Paveletzke each scored 12 points for Ohio. James added 11 points.

After returning to action for the final game of the Myrtle Beach Invitational and then aggravating a knee injury, Shareef Mitchell sat out again.

Ohio shot 51.8% from the field, including 7 of 16 (43.8%) on 3-pointers, and was 19 of 22 at the foul line.

Josh Omojafo paced the Colonials with 15 points. Antallah Sandlin’el scored 14 points, and Alvaro Folgueiras added 12 points. Robert Morris shot just 40.7%.

The Bobcats host Morehead State at 4 p.m. next Saturday at The Convo.
