Ohio puts five in double figures in win over BG

Laster finishes with 16 points, 7 assists

ATHENS – Ohio closed out its home schedule with a 75-59 victory against Bowling Green on Tuesday night at The Convo.

The Bobcats (13-16, 6-11 Mid-American Conference) had a balanced offensive attack and limited the falcons to 39.3 percent shooting. Teyvion Kirk and Mike Laster both scored 16 points, Doug Taylor had 14 points, Jordan Dartis finished with 11 points, and James Gollon tallied 10 points.

"It's a pretty deep moment,” Laster said. “It got to me a little bit; I'll say that."

Bowling Green (16-14, 7-10 MAC) only put two players in double figures: Demajeo Wiggins with 18 points and Justin Turner with 14 points. No one else scored more than 6.

Down 8-6, Ohio took the lead for good with a 7-0 run. Another 7-0 run extended the advantage to 25-12. The Bobcats’ lead reached 37-17 on a Kirk 3-pointer with three minutes left in the first half, but the Falcons got to within 39-27 by halftime.

After Ohio increased its lead back to 19, Bowling Green cut its deficit to 61-51 with 5:17 remaining. However, the Bobcats followed with a 14-4 run to take a 20-point advantage in the final couple minutes.

In his final home game, Laster passed out a career-high seven assists.

"The stat line that really jumps out to me tonight is Mike Laster's seven assists and one turnover," Ohio coach Saul Phillips said. “Passing hasn't been his forte since he got here, but he has been one of the most unselfish players that I've ever been around. Goes out helping his teammates win a game. That's pretty neat. We've now won three of four. We're playing some of our best basketball of the season at a good time, and our confidence is high right now."

Despite the win, Ohio’s chance of hosting a first-round MAC Tournament game was eliminated based on other game results. The Bobcats currently are tied for No. 9 in the standings.

The Bobcats close the regular season with a trip to face rival Miami at 7 p.m. Friday at Millet Hall.
