HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Forward Ajdin Penava was a block short of a triple-double with 33 points and 15 rebounds, and Marshall held off Ohio, 99-96, in overtime on Saturday night at the Cam Henderson Center.

Penava’s teammate Jon Elmore did record a triple-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, and C.J. Burks scored 31 points for the Thundering Herd.

After missing the last game with an injury, Jordan Dartis led the Bobcats (5-5) with 27 points, including 7 3-pointers, and Kevin Mickle had 19 points and nine rebounds. Teyvion Kirk scored 18 points, while Mike Laster had 12 points.

Gavin Block’s putback of a Kirk miss forced overtime with the score tied at 90, but Block’s deep, contested 3-pointer at the overtime buzzer was off the front of the rim.

Marshall (8-3) led by double digits early in the second half, but Dartis caught fire and his third 3-pointer of the second half just three and a half minutes into it gave the Bobcats a 49-48 advantage. He added another a minute later to push the lead to 54-50. Another Darits trey at the 12:33 mark made it 61-55, and a Mickle dunk after that gave the Bobcats their biggest lead of eight.

Marshall came back to tie the game at 68, and after Ohio went up 80-75 on a Mickle dunk with 5:59 remaining, the Thundering Herd scored six straight points to regain the lead.

Penava scored to give Marshall a 90-88 lead with 1:46 to go before Block’s basket just ahead of the buzzer forced overtime.

Burks gave Marshall the lead in overtime with two free throws with 2:55 remaining, and a Penava layup with 49 seconds left extended it to 96-92. Mickle and Penava each split free throws with a Kirk 3-pointer made it a 97-96 game with 17 seconds left. Elmore made two at the line to push the advantage to three for Ohio’s last possession.

Bad injury news continued for Ohio as Jason Carter, trying to slowly work his way back into game action, was unable to play in the second half. In addition, Laster aggravated a hamstring injury in overtime that prevented him from finishing the game.

Marshall shot 48.4 percent to Ohio’s 43.4 percent, and both teams were 10 of 30 on 3-pointers. The Thundering Herd had an advantage at the foul line, going 27 of 31, whereas the Bobcats were 14 of 18.
