ATHENS – Graduate transfer Kevin Mickle scored 19 points to lead five players in double figures in Ohio’s 80-57 exhibition victory against Capital on Saturday at The Convo.

Mickle was 8-of-13 shooting and added eight rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.

"He's been very good every day in practice," Ohio coach Saul Phillips said. "Just with him running the court alone changes the dynamic of this team. We can play off of him. He's been very consistent.”

Starters Jason Carter, Mike Laster and Jordan Dartis had 11 points apiece, and freshman Teyvion Kirk had 10 points as a reserve.

Ohio coach Saul Phillips went with a nine-man rotation, and virtually every player contributed in some way. In addition to Carter, Laster and Dartis, Doug Taylor (eight points, 10 rebounds) and Gavin Block (five points, three rebounds, four assists, three steals) started.

Kirk was the most impressive freshman, going 5 of 11 from the field with six rebounds, three assists and a steal in 22 minutes. Fellow freshman guard Zach Butler had one point, two rebounds and a steal in 11 minutes. Freshman forwards A.J. Gareri and Bennett Vander Plas sat out with injuries.

James Gollon, back after missing last year with an injury, had two points and a steal in 12 minutes.

The Bobcats dominated the boards, 52-28, including 18-3 on the offensive glass. Carter had seven rebounds and Dartis six.

Austin Schreck led Capital with 16 points. Dan Auble was the only other player for the Crusaders in double digits, finishing with 11.

Ohio led 38-31 at halftime and scored the first seven points of the second half to double its lead. The Crusaders were hanging close midway through the second half, trailing 58-47, but the Bobcats outscored the Crusaders 22-10 the rest of the way.

"It was good for the most part," Block said. "It got sticky at times. Except for a couple lapses on offense, I thought the ball was moving. We were getting it inside and getting good looks all day."

The Bobcats play their regular season opener against Alabama A&M at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Convo.
