Ohio basketball roster set for next season

Bobcats pick up Kirk, Mickle in place of transfers

ATHENS – With the recent announcement that senior Antonio Campbell will not be granted a medical redshirt season after suffering an injury that cost him the last half of the year, the Ohio men’s basketball roster presumably is set for 2017-18.

Since the end of last season, the Bobcat lost three players as graduate transfers: starting point guard Jaaron Simmons and reserve forwards Khari Harley and Wadly Mompremier. Freshman forward Rodney Culver also has transferred.

They were replaced with graduate transfer forward Kevin Mickle and incoming freshman point guard Teyvion Kirk. Coach Saul Phillips has said the final scholarship would remain unfilled for the upcoming season.

Mickle, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound power forward, played for two season at Florida Gulf Coast. He redshirted as a true freshman at Central Connecticut State and played one year for JUCO Broward College.

Considered a top defensive player, Mickle, of Brooklyn, N.Y., played in 63 games, including five starts, in his career with the Eagles. He averaged 2.0 points and 2.7 rebounds in 11.5 minutes per game. He shot 50.0 percent from the field and 64.5 percent at the foul line.

Kirk is a 6-4 point guard from Joliet, Illinois, who originally signed with Drake but was granted his release. He had offers from Arkansas, Middle Tennessee, St. Bonaventure, Kent State, Miami, Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois and UTEP and could compete for the starting point guard job as a freshman.

As a senior at Joliet West High School, Kirk averaged 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists per game to lead his team to a 25-3 record.

The Bobcats signed three players during the early signing period: forwards A.J. Gareri and Bennett Vander Plas and guard Zach Butler. The team graduated forward Kenny Kaminski, in addition to Campbell, the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year as a junior in 2016.

An All-MAC first-team selection, Simmons, a Dayton native who began his career at Houston, averaged 15.9 points, 6.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game. He transferred to Michigan.

Culver, of Reynoldsburg, played in all 31 games as a freshman for Ohio, averaging 2.6 points and 1.5 rebounds in 10.2 minutes per game. He transferred to JUCO Vincennes University.

Both injury-plagued throughout their Ohio careers, Mompremier and Harley combined to play one game in 2016-17. Mompremier, from Miami, Fla., and Harley, from Egg Harbor, N.J., both transferred to Arkansas-Little Rock.

Mickle and guard Mike Laster are the only scholarship seniors on the roster. Returning starters include junior guards Gavin Block and Jordan Dartis and sophomore Jason Carter, who was among Ohio’s leading scorers after being inserted into the starting lineup for Campbell.

Returning reserves from last year include Laster, junior center Doug Taylor, sophomore forward Ellis Dozier and sophomore guard James Gollon.
