Hot-shooting Bobcats blow out Bearkats, 96-75

Ohio connects on 15 of 27 3-pointers


ATHENS – Ohio knocked down 15 3-pointers in 27 attempts and ran away with a 96-75 victory against Southland Conference favorite Sam Houston State on Monday night at The Convo.

The Bobcats (2-0) led by 15 at halftime and extended their lead to 65-39 in the first four minutes of the second half.

Antonio Campbell had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the way, while Jordan Dartis and Kenny Kaminski – who made all five of his 3-point tries – both finished with 17 points.

Ohio made 10 of its 3-pointers in the first half in 17 attempts and then continued its hot shooting early in the second half. Kaminski, Dartis and Campbell hit shots from beyond the arc in the first two minutes of the second half to make it 54-34.

Campbell added a layup, a 3-pointer and another layup during a stretch in which he scored 10 straight Ohio points and pushed his team’s lead to 61-37. The lead reached 26 points on a Kaminski layup with 16:25 remaining and later maxed out at 72-44 on two Doug Taylor free throws at the 12:36 mark and on several other occasions after that.

Kaminski and Dartis set the tone early with 3-pointers to begin the game. Ohio made 5 of 6 treys in the first five minutes and then went up 17-6 on a Campbell layup. Gavin Block later hit a shot from deep to make it 28-11, and a Mike Laster layup put the Bobcats ahead, 33-15, at the 8:34 mark in the first half.

Block finished 3 of 4 on 3-pointers and reached double figures with 11 points, while Dartis was 4 of 9 and Campbell was 3 of 7. The Bobcats shot 52.5 percent overall and connected on 19 of 28 free throws.

Jaaron Simmons scored just six points but had nine assists. After a nine-point game to begin the season Saturday, freshman Rodney Culver did not score and had four fouls in only 13 minutes.

Dakarai Henderson led the Bearkats (1-1) with 18 points, while Torry Butler had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Sam Houston State shot just 38.8 percent from the field.

Ohio plays its first road game when it takes on Georgia Tech at 8 p.m. Friday in Atlanta.
